Thanks, Lynden.
I love the title of the first book. I have often said to my family, friends, church, etc., "I don't need to be nice." I learned that lesson many years ago while teaching a Computer Science service course at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. l had given a Word Processing assignment (one I had given on several occasions in the past) and the students said, "Mr. Johnson, be nice."
Waiting a couple of seconds, I reminded them that I had read the college catalog, the student handbook, and the faculty handbook - and none of them said anything about having nice faculty. It was so against my nature, I asked, "Why should I start now?"
It was a couple of weeks later as I was reading a text book for my MS in Community Counseling degree that I saw the following statement, "Nice people tend to be mentally ill." I went back to the classroom and reminded the students of our earlier conversation - and quoted them my text book.
It was 10-15 years later while in a local Upstate NY church that I again quoted myself, "I don't need to be nice." The pastor's wife heard my comment and thought she had me when she said, "But God says you have to be kind."
Again, I waited just the right amount of time (a couple seconds) and answered her, "But being KIND is what God wants and being NICE is what you want. Sometimes they are the same thing, but too often they are not."
I am careful to never tell anyone, "Don't be nice." Only, "I don't need to be nice." That is good, because for 40 years I have fooled my wife. She thinks I am nice - I won't tell her any different. I would ask the same of you.
Blessings,
