Content in TWO Colours (Colors)

Greetings!

Over here in the UK, in the Church of England we use liturgy quite a bit. When we are using liturgy on the screen we normally have the service leader saying one line and then the congregation responding with something else. It is REALLY helpful to have both the leader's and the congregation's lines on the same screen.

What we are used to doing in powerpoint is to have the leader's words in yellow and the congregation's words in white.

With proclaim we can't do this ... or so it seems. Can anyone think of a clever way of making this happen? At the moment it is easy to create a new content slide and enter the many screens of liturgy in the Main Content box. But when you try to make one line of text yellow (for instance) the whole lot turns yellow.

It would be really wondering if just the text you highlighted changed to the colour you selected, and the rest of the text was left alone.

Is this possible? Pretty please?

PS - I'm pretty sure that Jesus would spell Colour with a U! Just saying!!

Hello Evan,

You cannot make different lines of text in a single caption a different color; the color of the font applies to all of the text in the caption. What you could do is create multiple custom captions which have different colored fonts. This is a bit of work, but it will accomplish what you are trying to do.

As a fellow liturgical church guy (Lutheran), I know it sounds like a pain, but you shouldn't have to do it too often. Just set it up the way you want, and maybe change the backgrounds for the different seasons of the church year. In our church we would need a version for Sundays when we celebrate communion, Sundays when we don't, different versions for the Lenten and Advent Seasons, and maybe something for Festival Sundays like Pentecost, Easter, and so on... Wait, that does sound like a lot of work... thank goodness we can copy and paste!

As I've said before, this is desperately needed for us. There just isn't enough on-screen contrast between normal and bold in any of the decent-looking fonts on the system.

Spencer, sadly that wouldn't work really. Well, it might ... but it would be awful to work with like that.

I'm not talking about captions as such, but rather the main content block. The reason why this is important is that in the main content block we can easily add in long pieces of liturgy, spanning across multiple screens and quickly make edits to it.

I think my post is really highlighting an acknowledgement that while the ability to make two different lines in one content block different colours at the moment is impossible ... in the future it would be REALLY REALLY helpful if the coders could add in the ability to format different lines different colours. PLEASE!!!!

Essential for responsive readings or responsive use of psalms or litanies ... I don't use Proclaim but thought I'd support your cause here.[:)]

We've known we needed this for a long time (thanks for all the feedback) and it sounds like we're finally going to do it soon. The spec is just in the initial phase but here's what we're thinking. Add an 'Emphasis Color' as a formatting option like Bold and Italic, that can be applied to a span of text in the editor and appear on the slide.

Scott, I definitely see where this is useful. However, couldn't you all accomplish this much easier by allowing word wrap on custom captions?? It seems this would be quicker to implement.

I agree - word wrap on captions WOULD also be quite useful. As far as bits of liturgy go though this would work in one sense but would be a dreadful thing to work with if you've got say ten screens of liturgy in a row - you'd forever be having to input into different custom boxes! Bleurgh. Much better to have all the text in one place, so you copy and paste the whole lot in one go and then just split the screens up by entering paragraph breaks (returns) and highlighting/formatting the bits that need to be a different colour.

using separate caption boxes would make that process really laborious.

Not conerned too much as to how it is implemented (as long as it is implemented)

But it has become a critical issue at our church and has mitigated against our Proclaim subscription renewal.

We need an easy way to put leader and congregational responses in different colours on the same slide
(if we have to use power point slides to achieve this then there is a reduced need for Proclaim)

This probably applies to all liturgical church congregations: it is a key component of most liturgies, it is the way we use Litanies and other forms of responsive prayer, it is the way we use Psalms (responsively by either full verse or half verse) and is even the way we do some hymns/songs.

Bottom line is that liturgical churches are not going to adapt the way they do worship to the limitations of the software, they expect the software to be able to accomodate the way we do worship. Would love to be able to use Proclaim, but there are others on our worship team who would rather stick with Power Point until this is resolved.

To expand future sales prospects to liturgical churches, it would also be useful to be able to exchange service templates betwen different users rather than have each congregation have to assemble from scratch their own copy of the same Service. While we would have different templates for various forms of the Eucharist, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, once we have done that, it is difficult to persuade a neighbouring Parish to also adopt Proclaim if they would have to do all the front end work again for themselves from scratch rather than start with what we had already done.... is there a way to do this yet ?

Speaking as a pastor of a liturgical (Lutheran/ELCA) church, I'm not sure we were the initial target audience for software like Proclaim - but it's great to see them adapting to us and our needs.

I'm still sorting out how I want to use Proclaim in my liturgical service - I do a contemporary service and a liturgical service each Sunday (oye!). I AM finding that I actually HAVE to adapt how I do my liturgical service to be more visual and more accessible than just using the old hymn book for all the responses - and I LIKE that I'm having to think differently about these things. It's kind of exciting, and my congregation (by and large...) is picking up on my enthusiasm. Granted it's still all new to us (since Easter this year), but we're having fun!

When I've done some of the responsive readings and prayers, I've just designed announcement slides and just put custom fields (in different colors) in for each response. It IS, as you say, a lot of work up front to design the service, but then you have it and can just copy/past each week for whatever type of service you have (communion/non-communion, funeral, festival) and whatever color theme for the season (green for Pentecost, white for Easter season, blue for Advent, purple for Lent) and so on... Isn't this what you're doing?

I'm not sure what we would want the software to do differently - what are you asking it to do - bring the whole liturgy, or part of it, into one field that you could text-wrap and make each line a different color? And easily flow into a different slide, and apply "styles"? That sounds a little like how a song slide works - minus the different colors.

I'm still pretty much officially a novice at this, but each week I get a little better and more smooth at it - after I get it set up the way I want, I'll hand off much of the creative part to others more talented in that than I am... So I'm trying to chime in with you, and understand more what you're trying to do with the software...

Ok - finally tried to implement a responsive Psalm reading into Proclaim... my apologies! Due to my relative inexperience, I didn't understand fully what the OP was asking about. I don't think you can do it as Proclaim currently works WITHIN Proclaim itself.

Is what the OP asked for - multiple formatting options within a content block - any closer to implementation?

How are others doing this sort of thing? The only way I can think of is to design the slides and texts fully in PowerPoint, save them as jpgs, and bring them into Proclaim as backgrounds for content slides.

Two work arounds that we have used while awaiting the needed software design improvement :

Leader line in italics, congregational response in bold,
Assemble the Psalm in two colors in PowerPoint and import that PowerPoint instead of using Proclaim directly for any part of the liturgy with extensive use of responses (eg: Litanies).

I don't think number 1 would work - I don't see how to make any field but the content field do word wrap, and most of the Psalm readings are too long...

I did number 2 this week - put it together in PowerPoint and saved it as a jpg, then imported it as a slide show. It's pretty cumbersome - glad it's a relatively short psalm (10 verses, 2 per slide). Unlike the 1st lesson for this week - Genesis 1:1-2:4a - good heavens, it's 13 slides in OSB. I'm not sure I want to do something like that... That's just too much reading on the screen... 5 slides for the prayer of the day, 13 for the 1st lesson, 5 for the psalm, 3 for the 2nd lesson and 1 for the gospel... that's 27 slides that need to be switched along with the reading in a way that works for reading off-screen. That's just a whole lot of iPad swiping. Better charge up the batteries!

Back to the original topic - it would be much easier if we could use multiple fonts/colors on one slide for readings. It actually was a little hard to keep the psalm for this week in order - I actually caught myself doubling up on a verse because it was copy/paste a verse at a time and I kept getting interrupted. Better to copy/paste the whole thing and make the font changes.
