Using two laptops but cannot succeed with monitor setup. Help!

When I click on settings...there is only one monitor that shows up and no other options.

Do you have a second monitor or a projector connected to the computer?
Is it switched on and powered up?
Is it set to display from a computer?
Have you plugged the lead in to the right socket (I have been caught out by the 'Monitor Out' socket in the past)?
