The Logos.log you provided shows between 4-5 minutes worth of information - and it looks as though you had started doing things during this time.

When exactly does the pinwheel appear?

Echoing Graham's request. No one whats to read logs in a forum post. See the Mac Logging link in my signature for a utility that will collect and create an archive of your logs and place it on the desktop for easy attachment to a forum post.

This is definitely not typical and something is not working. The log files are important but also please run disk utility to make sure your hard drive is in good condition.
