Logos 5 is useless if you pause indexing

Second time this has happened to me. The system tells me that resources are ready to be indexed because it has downloaded them. But I don't want to index because that will start the indexing process which is a resource hog. But when I restart my system in the morning, the index process starts.

This would be fine if I could pause indexing AND Logos was still usable while indexing was paused. But it isn't.

I did a simple search for the word "bride" in my entire library and get zero results (7,500+ books)

This is extremely frustrating.

So i guess the only thing to do is shut off updates and simply download them manually.

Taxee, your experience only describes Logos' behavior when you didn't let it complete first time indexing. This condition means that Logos has no index data and thus will not be able to search. Of course you still can do a lot of other things with Logos, but search requires an index. You should let it run overnight instead of powering off and restarting the machine in the morning when the 'resource hog' disturbs your work (by the way: updating my old laptop to an SSD harddrive and a bit more memory has worked wonders regarding the usability of the machine during indexing)

However, once you have an existing index, pausing the incremental indexing which occurs after resources have been downloaded is really no issue. You may want to post indexer logs.

If the indexes go corrupt and Logos has to invoke first time indexing over and over again, this sounds like an upcoming hardware defect on your HD.

I've been advising that for people where the indexer impedes normal computer use, unless they are in dire need of a new resource they know just came in, to restart when they won't need the machine for a bit so the indexer doesn't get in the way. If they did just get a single resource or a small amount then the index process shouldn't take an overly long time to complete and should cause less challenges.

Your assumption is incorrect. I let Logos index completely when i installed it a year ago. The index was corrupted about 6 months ago and after talking with Logos tech, i completely reindexed it over night.

What i am discussing is what happens on incremental indexing with a newly downloaded purchase.

the indexing issue is probably the biggest failure in L5. I hate playing the waiting game all the time.

Hi Taxee,

I think you misunderstand me, or are just choosing a different way. I tell people let the updates run normally. Just don't restart the application to install the update until they won't need the computer for a bit.
