64-bit Operating System and Logos 5.

I use Logos 5 but recently it seems slow.

The operating system I use is 64-bit (laptop), and I have an X64 based processor. I use Logos 5, but I have updated from older machines, so is my Logos a 32 bit version and would a possible conflict with 32 and 64 bit computing slow me down or cause problems?

Logos 5.3 will be 64 bit => 5.3 Beta 1 Warning

Existing 32 bit applications cannot effective use more than 1.6 GB of RAM.

Newer Solid State Disk (SSD) or Flash Storage with write speed faster than 500 MB/sec noticeably improves Logos performance.

Any SSD noticeably improves write performance compared to the fastest HDD! And I doubt that one would notice any difference between 400 and 500 MB/s read speed.

[My laptop's 500/500 Intel SSD is crippled by a SATA 2 controller (300 MB/s) instead of the intended SATA 3 (600 MB/s), but performance in every respect is far superior to the old HDD].

Review shows eSata attached SSD with slower writes than HDD => http://www.notebookcheck.net/SSD-versus-HDD-in-comparison.18750.0.html plus shows internal SSD can be noticeably different. Review also shows SSD with lots of use has performance degradation so HDD is faster. Replacing 5400 RPM HDD with 7200 RPM HDD improves responsiveness.

That review comes from 5 years ago with SSD's like Intel X-25M "pushing the limits of SATA 2" (300 MB/s)! eSATA speed would therefore be similar to SATA 2. Performance degradation of SSD's has improved considerably since then.

You'd still need to read reviews for specific SSD models. Some cheaper models have rather serious issues, or are just duds.

I have 6 GB of installed memory. So by doing nothing I will soon get a 64 bit version of Logos (5.3), which will presumably allow me to use more RAM. This really is what I was asking, so my problem will be resolved. I have confidence in Logos, so initial teething problems will quickly be resolved. So I will keep smiling.

I did an Ookla speed-test and I have 8.61 mbps download and 0.82 upload speeds, ping = 22.

Perhaps using HDD, SSD or Flash Storage would not make a significant difference. I have an AMD Dual-Core E2-1800 APU processor, so I should be OK for faster performance.

Please let me know if my decision to do nothing and wait for version 56.3 is optimum.

The SSD will make a drastic performance difference. Most bench marks I've seen seem to show about double the performance of your hard drive on a newer ssd verses a newer mechanical drive (at 7200 rpm). Some benchmarks (such as boot time) are 3-5 times faster. Bringing up books, searches, and indexing all can be limited by your hard drive speed. Having it replaced with an SSD makes a dramatic difference. My desktop boots in 5.7 seconds... versus about 40 seconds with a mechanical drive. Indexing my library of 6100 books took almost 12 hrs on a mechanical drive (which is what you have) vs 3 hours on my solid state drive.

6gb of ram is good, APU's are not the fastest AMD offering at the moment, but they are not bad either. My dad has an APU in his laptop. Its quick. But not the most stable device I've ever used. One issue I've seen is that they tend to not use all the ram they have available. My dads for instance when he first got it despite having 6gb on board was only addressing 2gb of it and reserving the rest for bios. It took some work, but I was able to get that down to only a couple hundred mb. To check bring up control panel -> all control panel items ->system and on that page it should say 5.8gb ram with 200mb reserved, or maybe 6gb of ram, or some other numbers. As long as its close to 6gb its not worth fussing around with. If its like my dads pc that only had 2gb available to the operating system then you'll need to call your warranty service provider (or if your good with computers, and feel up to a challenge google may well reveal the answer to you).

I am not sure what SSD means. For back-up purposes I have a 1 TB external hard disk made by WD (Elements).

Is this something like I am recommended or what exactly should I get, and how do I use it?

Exactly right. Newegg.com is another good vendor. You may save a few dollars by comparison shopping. But if you have to ask what one is, its best to let a local professional install it for you. I suspect the upgrade will cost 1-2hrs of the techs time plus the cost of the drive.

Noel, I would recommend installing from scratch, rathing than cloning the drive. First time I cloned my drive, this time I did a fresh install using the computer's back up disks.
