I'm reading the same book on my iPhone but not on my iPad ; does anyone has the same experience?
Did you try typing rebuild index in the reference box on the home page (and giving it several minutes)? Is your library filtered in any way, or is the search box completely empty? Have you tried restarting the device (full shut down)?

My "unofficial" answer: The iPad 2 is on its last legs.
If you don't have a ton of books downloaded, you might want to try a reinstall.
