SUGGESTION: Link resources to follow only

This is a suggestion for improving the linking of resources in Logos, though I would love input from others if they have found ways to keep links under control.

Linking resources in Logos so that they scroll together is a great feature. However, currently all linked resources effect each other. It would be nice to assign one resource as the 'driver' and the others to simply follow.

Currently, if I am studying Matthew 3:4, when I open BKC it covers Matthew 3:3-10. If I have to scroll the window to view all of this section of the commentary, it changes all linked resources to Matthew 3:3-10. That means that now the NICNT is viewing Matthew 3:3, not Matthew 3:4.

If the Bible could be set as the driver (Zondervan Pradis did this), all resources would follow it, and not be changed because a different resources groups the verses differently.

IMHO, an option of using this kind of function would greatly improve an already outstanding program!

If this is offered, I'd hope it's an OPTIONAL alternative to the Logos' method. I still use Pradis for access to EBC, & while I've learned to navigate, I prefer the Logos method. So... if it's offered, I'm hoping it's offered as an option...

Yes, I agree that the Pradis interface was not very user-friendly. I only had it for the EBC as well. Certainly looking forward to having those in Logos now! Did you prepub those?

The only feature I liked from Pradis' interface was the way you could set one resource as the drive so that when you went other places in one commentary, things didn't move all around in the other linked resources. e.g. sometimes a commentary will refer to another chapter or book even. When following that link, every other commentary moves there...

Anyway, I would agree that if included it should be optional. But, I hope someday it might be included.

I didn't. At one time I could afford to invest in an alternative format for the same resource. No longer--at least for awhile (moved last Oct; tiny church; etc.). At any cost more than a nominal license transfer fee, I'll just keep using them in Pradis or will hope to see it some year in a Christmas special.

Just wanted to bump this thread again as I have been trying to study and my passage keeps changing because different resources that are linked do not have the same references.

Anyone else have that problem?

For example, studying Revelation 2:17, I have a linked commentary window. I use the arrow keys to change the resource, however some resources are linked to Rev 2:12, or even Rev 2:2. That changes the bible window, and then when I scroll down to read the resource, the next commentary will open to the wrong verse because now all linked windows are set to the wrong location.

It would be really nice if an option to Follow + Resource group A, B, C, D, E, F would be added so that as I switch from resource to resource, my main Bible window stays on target, and the next resource I switch to will get as close to the main window as possible.

Anyone have any other suggestions of a way to keep studies on track?

Yes, I miss that driver/follow style from Pradis (now a dead product - no more resources or support).

Be nice if we could tick, for example "C" AND "Follow" on any resource, and it would follow any "C" resouce. (At present its <letter> OR "Follow")

I don't like how all are drivers and mess and fight with each other at present. Makes a real mess having every resource fight, and no clear concept of working thru the master text or document on some matter.

It would be nice to have this kind of option. Right now the way I work around this is to unlink the commentary from the bible temporarily so I can scroll without the focus changing in the bible. Similarly, if I have my power lookup window set to follow and right click on a bible verse to get some quick commentary lookups, I will sometimes set the link in the lookup to "none" so the focus doesn't change if I click on another resource. I'm sure there is a way to do this quckly and easily with a button - perhaps a button that toggles the link set on and off without having to go through a menu.`

There is no native shortcut that I know of that allows the links to be toggled on and off or for setting them. You can use alt- to open the menu then hit the letter L to set the focus on the links and then tab through to get to the letter you want (or "follow" or "none") and then hit enter to activate. Of course it is much easier to just click with the mouse. However, if you create a macro to automate all these keystrokes and then assign a button to activate the macro then it all happens instantly. When the API is up and running such shortcuts can be easily created using internal commands.

I would also like to see the "parent/child" type of linking. As others have mentioned, this would be particularly useful when using commentaries.

Some have mentioned another product that does linking this way. There is also another (that is inferior to Logos in essentially every other aspect). Since I don't think we are supposed to mention other products by name, let's just say it's the one made by a company that was recently acquired by a very large Christian bookstore chain/publishing house owned by a large denomination primarily associated with the Southern U.S.

I would also like second this suggestion. Especially for Commentaries it would be useful. I find that so often I click on a commentary to read the text which is linked to a Bible and all of a sudden my bible jumps because the commentary is commenting on a large section of text, and so the Bible moves to the beginning of that text.

I don't want my Bible to move with the commentary, but I do want the commentary to move with the Bible! A "Follow" button next to the Link Set options would allow a resource to be within a Link Set but only be allowed to follow, never to lead.

This is a great idea and would solve a lot of problem. It would be great to have a follow button for allow linkable resources!

But it is not/was not "fool proof".

If anything happened to your "link driver" your whole system of links collapsed. It was not that user - friendly, at least not the way Pradis encoded it.
