Kevin Purcell's Logos 6 Review
I am a big fan of Kevin's regular column in Christian Computing Magazine. His is always the first one I read and often the only thing I read in the magazine.
He did his usual wonderful writing, this time covering Logos 6:

I always enjoy reading Kevin's reviews, but this statement struck me as kind of odd. Maybe he's right; but some of the new features convince me that Logos is serious about helping us put our large libraries to good use. It is one thing to have all these different resources; it's quite another quickly to locate what we need. L6 is already saving me more time on a regular basis. In addition to new features, L6 has definitely made L5 features more useful. It might be enough to attract new users. But what do I know?

i think you are on the money. Perhaps some won't but i like the features and refinement, you do, and others might as well. Perhaps he made too definitive of a statement, but that makes for good reading and energetic responses!. As for features, i think Psalms tool is pretty cool, for one.
I like Apples. Especially Honeycrisp.

He mentioned being able to send a book to kindle to read. First How? Second, can you do the opposite with kindle or Amazon books?

I don't have L6 yet, but from what I've learned about it I think Kevin is correct. It's like a new car model with redesigned fenders (think tail fins) and some added chrome to jazz it up. There are only a few items such as Weights and Measures and new maps that I find particularly interesting.
POLL: How long before Logos once again changes the company name? Also, that new logo is really lame.

Of course, in the next sentence, Kevin concludes that "all Logos owners should upgrade." So, I doubt he thinks L6 is just L5 with some added chrome.

It would be nice If they were to transform it into a BMW, Ferrari or (dare I hope?) a Bugatti Veyron.

There are some things Kevin didn't mention that I think are powerful additions to L6 (I am sure he could have mentioned these if he had more space):
1. Searching is much faster. I don't have benchmarks to compare to, but it seems quite fast now.
2. We have lots of new search capabilities: Milestone searching, label searching, speaker searching, and others. I am not a big fan of Inline searching, but Everything search is nice and so is the new Media search.
3. Curated resources. Logos is adding tagging to Journals and Sermons (at least) allowing us to better discover the resources we are probably looking for.
4. Improvements to notes. Thank you for the spell checker. Multiple insertion points is really helpful.
5. Propositional outlines looks like it is going to be very useful.
6. The Textual variants and Ancient literature sections of the guides are great additions.
7. Logos has added some data I cannot claim to understand but I am sure some folks will find it indispensable: Case Frames and Clause Participants.
8. We can synch personal books between computers.
L6 does not have a single killer new feature (like morph searching and syntax searching were). It has a bundle of new, smaller features that lay people through seminary professors ought to find useful.

Thanks for the Kudos. I'm not able to be on hand here on daily basis as I used to since ministry and writing take up so much more time than they used to.
I appreciate the encouragement and would like to respond to a few things.
1st - My point about owners of other programs shouldn't switch just for Logos 6, what I meant and maybe should have said more clearly is that people who have heavily invested in a powerful program like Accordance, Wordsearch, Bibleworks and even PC Study Bible can't afford Logos 6 and there's nothing new in 6 that makes it a must switch. That's not saying that the improvements are good. As I said, ALL 5 owners should update. But few can afford to own two powerful suits and once heavily invested, another program will have to really offer a TON before someone can afford to leave behind hundreds to thousands of dollars of resources. Most people don't have time or the inclination to learn to powerful packages like some of us Bible software geeks do.
2nd - I didn't intend for this to be a full review but more a list of my favorite updates and features that make it worth the upgrade. Logos 6 is the kind of program that would take all 12 of my year's worth of columns to give Logos 6 an in depth review. So that was my goal and I think I hit it. Hope so anyway.
Again, thanks for the kind words. I'm primarily a Logos user although I have Accordance, Olive Tree Wordsearch, Laridian, e-Sword, PC Study Bible and Bible Glo all installed on this machine right now. If someone told me I could only own one Bible program and offered to buy out my library on all of the others I'd keep Logos and sell off the others, although I can't because most of those others were given to me and not purchased. In fact, Logos has never given me a single book free that's not available to all others and I still choose to use it first.
