Regression: 6.0a "speeding" tickets

* Ticket 1Logos 6.0a (6.0.1.0032) search in All Bibles takes 3.59 seconds on Windows 7 using 2.3 GHz i7-3610QM with SanDisk 240 GB SSD while this search:

(<Sense = man>, <Sense = person>) WITHIN 0 WORDS <Person Jesus>

takes 13.59 seconds on OS X 10.10.1 using 4.0 GHz i7-4790K with Apple's 256 GB SSD.  GeekBench shows i7-4790K having 4043 score while i7-3610QM has 2598 score so OS X search should be faster instead of 10 seconds slower.  Both computers have 8 GB of RAM.

* Ticket 2Locked thread => Scrolling: Reverse Interlinear Bible, which can be very slow at times has repeatable steps. Logos 6.0.1.0032 on OS X 10.10.1 with 4 GHz i7 and Apple 256 GB SSD has several dozen hesitations when scrolling down (from Exodus 1 to Exodus 10) as reverse interlinear pane refreshes.  Scrolling up has fewer reverse interlinear pane refreshes (and fewer scrolling hesitations).  Turned off interlinear at bottom; turned on in-line interlinear with surface, manuscript, and Strong's.  Using arrow keys to scroll down, noticed momentary pause at the end of chapters.  Chapter pause is more noticeable (annoying) when using a trackpad to scroll ESV with in-line interlinear.

* Ticket 3: Scrolling an Exegetical Guide Word by Word section while section is being populated can be a bit challenging => https://community.logos.com/forums/p/30415/225343.aspx#225343  After Word by Word is populated, scrolling is responsive.

* Ticket 4: Clicking "+" to open another commentary is slower on OS X 10.10.1 as the right hand list of commentary resources with the same verse takes seconds longer to appear than Windows 7 (on an iMac that should be noticeably faster).

* Ticket 5: Right Click menu in Bible Resource using Logos 6.0.1.0032 is sluggish on Windows 7 and OS X 10.10.1 while items are populated.  Example: right click on 144,000 in ESV then wait for right side to populate four lemmas with topics before left side appears.

* Ticket 6: Dreaming of option to customize Left Hand Side order in Right Click pop-up so can speedily choose.  For example, click on reference on Right Hand Side needs scroll down on Left Hand Side for Top Bible choice; would appreciate being able to bypass scrolling.

* Ticket 7: Sympathetic highlighting is seconds slower to appear on 5K display with OS X 10.10.1 (4.0 GHz i7-4790) than 1080p display for Windows 7 (2.3 GHz i7-3610QM).

While I find the speed of Logos on my Mac fine, I can confirm all 7 tickets (running on the same system). The one I notice the most is the sluggish right click - it takes a little time for the menu to populate. That said, I understand that others perceive more serious lags in performance on their Mac.

My system performs fine on all your Tickets and I have a slower specs than you have have. 1TB 7200 RPM with 128GB SSD.

I ran the search twice and I see the following:

    First run...

Second search ran faster I think because of more disk has been cached or moved to the SSD

At any rate what does the activity monitor show? Any bottlenecks (Memory, CPU, Disk)? Also,  just out of curiosity how many resources do you have?

I assume Logos is the only app that is sluggish on your system.

Maybe logging can used for performance issues as well as events.

For grins, restarted iMac.  Activity Monitor now shows 7.88 GB used out of 8.00 GB with 0 Bytes of Swap Used.

Opened Logos 6.0.1.0032 to a Blank Layout, followed by running search twice:

Initial search time of 9.97 seconds is an improvement over 13.59 seconds, but a bit slower than an older Windows 7 laptop so Ticket # 1 remains.

What times do you get running a bible search for all bibles for just new Testament with your query instead of an everything search? I was wondering if something has gone awry with non bible index.

I assume when you ran the query to compare times on windows it was for everything search as well. Is this the case? You said your times for Ticket one were for all Bibles but did not know if it was a Basic Search or Bible Search?

Launch Logos 6.0b Beta 3 (6.0.2.0031) to Blank Layout (with indexing complete), opened two Search Tabs: one to Everything and one to Bible, followed by pasting search into each tab shows 64 bit Windows 7 is faster than 64 bit on OS X 10.10.1

Please try this search again in 6.0b Beta 4. We've made a change to a database component and I'm curious if it results in any speed change for you.

  • Speeding Ticket 1 revisited using Logos 6.0b Beta 4; OS X is still slower on faster computer with higher resolution display:

    OS X 10.10.1 - 4.0 GHz i7-4790K with 16 GB Ram and Apple's 256 GB SSD on 5K Retina Display (with 6.0.2.0034 using 558.6 MB)

For my set of resources on beta 4 the times are about the same as prior betas.

Are you performing the same search? In your OP, you wrote it was a "search in All Bibles"; this appears to be an Everything Search across the entire library.

It's hard for us to compare results if the setup is different. [:)]

I'm guessing you're looking at warm start/cold start effects here, since your posted search times have bounced between 3s and 13s. Run the search multiple times and take the last result if you want a consistent benchmark.

Also, I didn't realise until now you were timing a Bible Grid search. The UI of those results is not optimised so it doesn't make a very good test harness right now.

Same search (Bible in Versers view), actually mine is about 1 second slower than before. At any rate, I don't seem to be having the same issue as "Keep Smiling 4 Jesus" so don't know if this helps you any.

I run L6 on a PC with an SSD drive.  I have the latest beta installed.  One thing I've noticed is a slight "hitch" when I run a search of all resources.  It seems a tiny bit slower; but what really catches my attention is the pause before search results are displayed.  Instead of a fraction of a second (as before), it takes about 4 seconds before results are displayed.

My Windows 7 result for Basic All Resources in 6.0a SR-5 is commensurate with your Library Results in Everything (half the results in half the time). But Library Results in Everything is slower with the same results; so I don't trust Everything as a benchmark.

I have 1st gen i5-460M 2.53 GHz with SSD and 8 GB memory.

  • * Ticket 8: If start Logos 6.0b Beta 4 with Use Internet = Yes, followed by later losing internet (network went offline so computer has connection to  router with next device losing network access).  Experienced Logos 6.0b Beta 4 becoming non-responsive while sync could not complete.  One example was trying to close a search tab that would not close (after several clicks on X) so needed to forcibly quit.  Another thread => help with resources and which laptop to use includes:

Logos 6 has problems with speed on my new laptop Slow Maybe there is to much stuff going on in the back ground of logos 6 Like searching on books in the book store Can there be more options on switching of some of the cloud stuff Can some one from logos give info on the stuff which can be turned off And saved as a profile for optimising logos 6

Wonder if more Logos 6 Internet Use program settings would be helpful?  Puzzled by two LogosCEF.exe processes running on Windows 7 for Logos 6.0b Beta 4 that had been opened to Blank layout followed by layout with three search tabs.

    * Ticket 9: Logos 6 synchronization takes noticeably longer when opening and closing application.

I'm guessing you're looking at warm start/cold start effects here, since your posted search times have bounced between 3s and 13s. Run the search multiple times and take the last result if you want a consistent benchmark.

Created a layout with three searches (Everything, Bible Verses, & Bible Grid.  Closed Logos 6.0b Beta 4.  Opened to blank layout; waited for sync to complete.  Choose saved layout and learned layout saved two Bible Search tabs with results in both tabs being last one chosen.

Windows 7 cold (surprised by Bible Grid change to Bible Verses that did not match Named Layout):

OS X 10.10.1 cold (surprised by sync layout having different Bible Search display):

Bible Search surprise: clicking arrow to refresh changed result view in tab so Grid changed to Verses and Verses changed to Grid.

    Windows 7 warm:

OS X 10.10.1 warm has one search result in Everything that is faster than Windows 7:

    * Ticket 9: Logos 6 synchronization takes noticeably longer when opening and closing application.

Logos 6.0b RC1 (6.0.2.0039) log shows Application not being idle at 06:18:09 initiated automatic SyncManager of all Sync clients.  At 06:18:13, log shows OnClosing since Quit was sent, which did not complete until 06:21:34 that is over 3 minutes later (and prevents OS X shutdown).  Application had been opened to blank layout on 9 Jan followed by quit today.

    8132.Close60bRC2ChecksResources.zip

Also noted 100's of sync requests going back years.  Perhaps sync needs periodic checkpoint so can reduce amount of sync changes requested/sent (instead of all changes since initial Logos 4 Mac alpha release).
