Survey RE: Installing Desktop Application To Memory Cards or USB Thumb Drives

To be clear:

This is about Faithlife desktop apps - Logos, Verbum, Noet, or Vyrso.
This is not about installation to a HDD nor to a SSD.
This is not about mobile apps installations.

If you have installed one of the Faithlife desktop apps to a memory card (SDXC, Memory Stick, CF , etc.) or to an USB thumb drive, or if you have tried too and abandoned the attempt, please report your experience in this thread.

I have installed Logos 5 to an USB attached microSDXC card and use this installation regularly with satisfaction.

I have read of other similar installations without a clear sense of the level of satisfaction or the rate of success.

I am unaware of a Vyrso "desktop" app. As far as I know, Vyrso is only offered for iOS & Android (mobile apps).

I moved my installation of Logos 5 onto a microSD card using NTFS symbolic links (junction point). The drive occasionally goes missing, and I have to re-insert the card to fix it. Attempting a full index with a library of more than a few hundred resources is not recommended - it is better to use a quick installation/update method based on your PC installation. Performance on my Asus VivoTab Smart tablet is satisfactory (loading is slow).

No, it's for PCs running Windows 8, and it runs in the 'modern' interface. It's extremely limited in functionality (less than the iOS and Android mobile apps).

This Windows 8 based install is used on a late 2010 11inch MacBook Air - so only USB 2 available and no built-in card reader to compare with.

I have experience with built-in card readers, many are USB 2 attached devices. For built-in readers that are pci attached driver quality seems to be the limitation, some are very good though.

I absolutely agree that installing and configuring/indexing directly to the card is ill-advised. As the MacBook Air was my only pc the past four years I installed Logos to a USB attached HDD and then moved the installation to the memory card.

I have sought the least physically obtrusive external flash storage option for this MacBook Air installation. There are much better performance options such as USB 3 attached devices that others with different needs considering this type of installation might find to be more satisfactory.

As to performance I have two actively used Logos libraries - separate accounts - installed for use on my MacBook. I have a smallish library installed natively on OS X Snow Leopard and a considerably larger library installed natively on Windows 8 Pro using BootCamp. The smaller library is installed to the internal SSD. The larger library is installed to a microSDXC card attached via USB 2. In day to day use the difference in perceived performance is not severe.

For additional comparison, I have a separate installation of the larger library on a Dell M6600 workstation, running Windows 7 Pro 64bit, with a 2.4GHz first generation i7 quad core, 16GiB RAM and, a 2GiB NVidia Quadro 3000m GPU. My impression is that CPU, GPU, and RAM effect perceived performance more than Disk I/O except when indexing.
