Free upgrade for connect subscribers
OK. So what am I missing here. Did I really get ALL of the new features on Logos 8 for free? Just because I'm a faithlife connect subscriber?

Yes - that is one of the benefits of subscribing.

What happens if the subscription to connect is cancelled?

You lose the features. You're effectively renting them via your subscription.

So is the Logos 8 software a free upgrade for Connect users? If so where can I download it from, everything I see is base packages?

Of course, you can cancel your subscription and buy the feature set at https://www.logos.com/product/165935/logos-8-full-feature-upgrade but to me the things that you get with a subscription more than pay for themselves.

Joey, you should have received an email from Faithlife with a link to upgrade. When you click on it it will upgrade you to L8 automatically.

So in your opinion keeping the subscription service would be a better value than purchasing just the feature upgrade?

Absolutely. The subscription gets you resources (depending on your level) on top of the features.

So I am a FL Connect subscriber and have not received the email. Is that the only way to get the upgrade?

What is your cost for the full feature set? How many years will you need to subscribe before you spend that much? How many new features will you have to wait for until the next full release (about 2 years from now) because you are no longer subscribed and does this matter to you? Do you take advantage of the other FL Connect benefits and what value do they have to you?
These are questions only you can answer. For me the $100 or so a year for the subscription is worth keeping up-to-date with new features and the occasional use of one of the other FL benefits. It's up to you.

I had a notification on the home page in my L7 desktop application. It had a "Get it now" link (or something like that), which opened a browser window for a $0.00 "purchase" of Logos 8. Then doing an "Update now" in L7 got the L8 upgrade to happen.

Brad,
I'd like to add my 2 cents worth.
Bob had stated that how Logos Now, Logos Connect, or, whatever it's being called this week, is a way for us to pay as we go, or to buy it outright all at once. (Not a direct quote, but, you get the idea).
I've not been too happy with Logos, until L7. I came in a few months prior to the end of L3 and to see L7 within a few years was extremely disheartening. L7 happened to be the first time I got a great deal for being a "recent upgrade". while I didn't get sweet deal per se, for 8, I feel I got a decent upgrade. While I'm not 100% thrilled with the idea that I am renting the feature sets, right now, I'm ok with it.
What makes it worth it for me is we get free books, on the level Im at, I get to "borrow" 2 mobile ed courses a year (I think). Of course, the discount on the Base package.
To me, the benefits for being a subscriber outweigh being an owner. While I might lose the feature sets, I will have the books at a decent price. And in the end, I think I come out a little ahead, as I've not totally upgrade proofed by Bible, but, it was nice to not get irritated because there's yet ANOTHER upgrade that would cost me several hundred AGAIN!
Well, hope that helps you decide, if you had not already decided, and if you have, maybe some one else.Brad said:David Taylor Jr said:Brad said:What happens if the subscription to connect is cancelled?

I've cancelled my Connect subscription and it expires next month. Any idea what happens if I use the Connect upgrade to 8 and then my subscription runs out. Does everything downgrade to 7 again?

I don't know but I suspect that it depends partially on when the free Logos 8 engine becomes available.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

From what I (mis)understand, if you are in the "grandfathered" pricing, you do NOT want to cancel (or let it lapse) because once it lapses, it won't renew at that lower rate.
And once you stop the subscription, everything that is "rented" goes back. So, yes, you would lose anything that wasn't owned.
Now, if you buy a base package, you will lose the feature sets, but, unless I am wrong, you would keep the books. As far as going back to 7? That I am not quite sure on. Since the shell is free, you should be able to keep the new format. Although free, it is no longer madeimmediately available to those who simply upgrade the "shell", it will be made available later for free. This policy change was made with L7,
So again, if you are a grandfathered price tiered subscriber, I recommend keeping the subscription; if for nothing else, the discounts and extras you get.Simon Smailus said:I've cancelled my Connect subscription and it expires next month. I had the email (yay. That error finally got fixed) and I opened L7 and a little pop-up window was hiding on my desktop screen.
I'd go to the base package page add it to your cart. If it does not drop to 0.00 then I'd call in, and they should be able to help.Ted Harms said:So I am a FL Connect subscriber and have not received the email. Is that the only way to get the upgrade?

I'm actually moving away from the Logos platform, so the "grandfathered" pricing is of no interest to me.
I'm trying to work out the best exit strategy and the release of v8 complicates things slightly. I have many resources in Logos (user since Libronix) and still need access to them. As it stands, I shall upgrade and see what happens when my Connect subscription expires. As I tend not to use the notes system, I'm not sure I'd lose a great deal if I ended up needing to reinstall?
Does anyone know how the Connect system works? I'm assuming that with every version upgrade you get to keep the free version if you ever decide to unsubscribe? If not, do you fall back to the version you were on when you started your Connect subscription?

You won't lose access to those resources, but you may lose access to features which take advantage of resources you own. (E.g., lemma in passage, bible browser, certain reverse interlinears).
Simon Smailus said:I'm assuming that with every version upgrade you get to keep the free version if you ever decide to unsubscribe?
Yes. You'll still have the same version of the program that corresponds to your most recent free version. That never falls back to an earlier version, even if you unsubscribe.
What you lose access to are any features or tools which you no longer have licenses for. So, for example, if you never bought an L7 feature set, your features would now be limited to a combination of features you owned from past purchases (e.g. an L6 feature set), and features provided by the free version (a handful of L7 features).
Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!

You'll lose everything you did not purchase (or get free, eg. free book of the month). I believe (and maybe incorrectly, that the resources gained from the free codes with the subscription are keepable as well. If you cancel, and decide to return, you'll be subjected to the new higher rates. That's how I understand it, anyway. Again, we may end up losing the modern and classic and ebook upon subscription exit, but, at this point, not sure. They are not in the "temporary list" under Licensing, so, that is why I assume they are our's to keep.

Hi Simon
Have you decided what you will move too?

I really should have clarified by what I mean when I said, "moving away". As I have a lot of resources tied up in Logos, it will still have a permanent place on my mac, ios and android devices. However, I will not be looking to purchase new resources.
Your question really depends on what you use Logos for. Personally, I only search and read in Logos. The other features are rarely used. Typically I will look up passages in various translations and look up original language queries. Other features are really not used at all. The fruit of my reading, searching and thinking are not kept on the Logos platform.

You will not lose the L8 engine but you will lose all the Connect features which cover the L8 Full Feature Set which would remove a lot of the features you probably have used and enjoyed.
If you are determined NOT to continue your subscription, your best approach would be to buy an L8 package at the Silver Level or above with the Feature Sets included using your special Connect 30% discount. That way you'll retain all the features you've been 'renting' up until this point.
EDIT: Based on the additional information above, you can upgrade to the L8 engine now, or later when it is made available to everyone, then you'll lose the features linked to above when Connect expires and you can go on using Logos for the basic things you want it for.

You will lose your subscription books --> you can see them in Library using license:temp
It's doubtful you will lose the L8 engine, but you won't be licensed to use the new features.

If you make extensive notes/highlights in L8 using the new Notes tool, they will not be available on the old/current Notes system. So if you use the Connect upgrade, you should elect to use the old Notes (type set prefer notes tool to NO in Command/GO box). Then they will be migrated to the new tool.
