Please help!

Can someone explain specifically how to go back to 7 on a MacPro? I'm a FL Connect member and downloaded 8 for free, but I don't have the time or desire to work through this rollout which actually loses functionality, and then have to wait an unspecified amount of time to maybe get back the functionality I currently had in 7. I don't ever use the web app, don't see the use or need. I purchased the desktop version for a reason--maximum functionality. I don't need or want a stripped down version. I'm not upset at all, just wasn't expecting a beta version to be released. I'd be glad to switch to 8 if/when all the functionality of 7 makes it way into 8. Until then, I just want to do what all I was able to do 48 hours ago. Thanks!

Matthew, you'll need to contact Customer Service. At the least they will need to change your software license back to L7 or when you revert automatic updates will take you back to L8. Once that is done it would be a matter of uninstalling L8 and reinstalling L7. Again, best to discuss this with CS to be sure it goes smoothly. I wouldn't be surprised that the CS agents haven't had much experience doing this.

Regarding your upset, you didn't know what wouldn't work and that is something FL should have given more thought to explaining. This has happened at least once before, but usually upgrades don't lose functionality.

L8 isn't a beta version. It is a release version with functionality to be added. Faithlife (and other software companies) often use this approach to get better customer feedback so they can tailor the software better through subsequent updates. So it isn't complete, but it isn't a beta, either. However, there is no use arguing over terms. You are unhappy with the product and there should be a way for you to get back to what you want. Call CS or email support@faithlife.com.

1. Parallel highlights are gone (I don't see them or how to turn them back on if they're there).

2. You can no longer click on a reading plan from the home page and have it open to your existing layout. Instead, it closes your layout and opens a layout that FL has decided upon. Definitely not the layout I'm going to use for my daily reading.

3. You can no longer customize the home page. I know there's talk of it being fixed eventually, but why release a "new"version that does less than the current version?

4. I have read on the forums (but haven't had the time to experiment with) that the new notes system lacks several things that the previous note system had.

I'm sure others can give more examples. I'm in seminary and just don't have time to wait for features to come back or to figure out a whole new way to do what was perfectly fine for me 48 hours ago. I've got assignments due this week and next, etc. Like I said, let me go back to what I had and then let me know when 8 does what 7 did. It's like saying the 2019 edition of a car is out now but they did away with power steering until later. Not mad, just want it to work without waiting 6 weeks or indefinitely. It seems like the whole point of 8 is to make the desktop version like the web app, which is a stripped down version of the full desktop program if I understand correctly. I only use the desktop version, I want all the features, not some.

Do the links you gave me explain how to reinstall 7 once I've deleted 8? Am I going to lose anything? Is it going to take 4 hours?

Matthew - I'm on Windows not Mac but share your frustrations.

Unfortunately I'm getting the impression that getting back to 7 is not a realistic or sensible option so joining Faithlife on the Fail Forward journey of Logos 8 is probably the best option.

Choices in methodology and use of other tools means that I seem to have escaped some of the higher impact issues.

There are some things that you can do while staying on 8 that may help.

One example is switching back to the old format Notes, this is documented elsewhere and there seem to be a number of issues triggered by moving to the old format. This may or may not help you.

I would expect that some other strategies will emerge over the next few days, Logos users have learned to be resourceful and solve problems in multiple ways. Breaking the problems into small manageable issues may help. It sounds stupid but adding a couple of Windows to my Layout and using the Windows <Alt> <Tab> to switch between windows has helped me create a workable solution to a couple of my productivity issues.

I'm also confident that Faithlife will do the right ting and eventually pull on their Super Man outfits and fix the problems being raised. The ones that they already know about will be the priority but they will pick up the others as well. How quickly things get fixed will vary,

I also go back to the same 95 era I agree its often been painful but history does show things will get better.

You may of course be left with no choice but to try reinstating 7 but right now I would suggest that should be plan b not a.

I restarted and tried again. This time it did load the proper starting verse from my reading plan, but it stayed on the Bible that was saved in my current layout instead of switching to the Bible specified in the reading plan (my default layout has several Bibles open including all of the ones I use for my various daily reading plans). So I tried it again using a different plan and it locked up and I had to force quit and restart. I tried again and got the same results--it opened to the correct passage but did not change to the correct Bible. So I have to either remember which Bible to manually switch to or open up the reading plan from docs and go to each reading plan from there. Maybe they can tweak your way so that it does what it did in 7, but what it's doing in 8 is not the same, it doesn't open to the Bible that is specified in the reading plan.

Did you click on "Replace with current layout" when you made your changes? It needs to be the Bible Reading Plan layout under Home Page the Home Page layouts section of the layouts menu. When you return to the layouts menu it should say "custom" next to it.

Matthew, I'm a little dense here. What function are you referring to? Actual highlights you've applied, or the Logos-generated highlights between versions when you select or hover over a word?

If the latter, that's still in the software. Click on Visual Filters (the 3 circles), under Resources select "Corresponding Words". This has to be checked in any references between which you wish to have this interconnection work.

Yes, I did everything you said. But it will only work if your current layout happens to be using the same Bible as the reading plan you launch. My layout has nine different Bibles opened. I have three daily reading plans that use different Bibles. So if my default layout is saved with the LEB as the currently visible Bible (although there are eight other Bible tabs in my default layout) and I click on a reading plan whose Bible is the ESV, it will open to the passage from the reading plan, but it will stay in the LEB even though the ESV is the tab right next to it.

Whatever you decide to do, I would strongly recommend you make a backup copy of your Logos folder to be absolutely sure that if a mistake is made in reverting back to L7, you have not lost any of your settings and notes.

Matthew, I'm not trying to make little of something that means a lot to you, but the list you gave seems fairly minor. To revert to L7 is going to take quite a bit of time. Then you'll lose the functions in L8 that might be helpful to your studies (Theology Guide, some of the workflows, search templates, Canvas, for example).

I wonder if what you've highlighted is 'mission critical' enough to be worth the time and potential loss?

Again, please take that as a gentle question. I know what is important to you may not be important to me, but it doesn't seem what you are talking about is critical to the real purpose for which you own Logos Bible software.

Thanks Mark. I'm sure you're right, I'm just frustrated. I don't understand the decision to release a "new" version of the software that doesn't do all that the previous version did. We want new features, better search options, faster loading, etc. Who wants to have things that weren't broken and that we used every day removed? I use my multiple reading plans every day and was perfectly fine with the homepage and my ability to customize it. Why would you do away with corresponding highlights? It was a wonderful feature. I may have made highlights 5 years ago in a Bible and now I prefer another Bible and am making highlights in it. No problem in 7. It's the same as if suddenly notes made in one Bible are no longer attached to other Bibles. But that still works in 8 as far as I can see. It just don't understand the reasoning at all.

I followed Levi's link to the notes FAQ and see the corresponding highlights is twelfth on the list of priorities. Who knows how long that will take? I guess what I just don't get is why release Logos 8 until it's ready? Why go through the customer frustration and disappointment that sours what should be a joyous release campaign? Why not wait another six months if that's what it takes to get it right and roll it out with pride? I suspect it's a matter of wanting/needing the Christmas purchase revenue that a Fall release will generate. FL really is an odd mix of brilliance and things that make you scratch your head. I appreciate all your help and advice on this and the countless times I've read your comments and posts! Thanks for giving of your time and knowledge Mark.

All sorts of things, including staffing, budgets, vacation time, other marketing plans, and so on (virtually most of the life of the company) gets pinned to that release date. If something gets delayed they cannot just slip the release date (especially six months). I get that. You cannot run a business as big as Faithlife's from month-to-month.

The result is what we always see with a new major number release: not everything is as ready as FL (and we) would like it to be. It is stable (for the most part), so people aren't dealing with what beta testers have to deal with. But it is likely incomplete.

The only thing FL could do is better communicate what doesn't work in the new release, esp. when it takes users backwards.

So this is something else FL has failed to tell customers about. Coresponding highlights do not work. What else have they broken and failed to tell customers about? FL continues to treat customers with disrespect when they don’t man up and provide information on everything they have broken before selling a major ‘upgrade‘ to the software.

As this is a Notes feature does the highlighting work if the Old Format notes are used in Logos 8?
