Make Logos 8 look more like Logos 7

Ok. So I know we have complained a lot about every little change that we do not like. And FL’s patience with our whining has been exemplary. Thank you so much for your patience.

But also understand that many of us have really gotten used to the look and feel of the Bible study tool that greets us every morning. And now that look and feel is kinda different and many of us are just really slow to change, especially with something we have developed such an emotional attachment to. We are excited and nervous and uncertain all at the same time.

So, if anyone is aware of are any changes we could make in the settings that would get back some of the look and feel we have grown so accustomed to, there are some of us that would be ever so grateful for that information. For instance, what were all the default fonts in L7? That one thing would really go a long way.

There is the scaling issue that Whyndell mentioned.

And for those who may not know, we also have the ability to revert to the old notes system. Thanks FL for including that!

So, if anyone has any other tips, I know that myself and several others would be very grateful.

No there is not any customizing that I am aware of that would make it look/feel more like L7. Also note, the old notes system is eventually going away. The only reason to switch back to it currently is if there are features in the old system that have not been brought over that you actively need/use.

I've asked in another post specifically how to go back to 7 until all of the 7 features are working in 8 and all of the kinks are worked out and I haven't gotten a reply even though someone from FL replied to someone else after my comment. It makes no sense to release a "new" version that does less than the previous version.

This is a risk with being an early adopter. There was no requirement to upgrade to L8. Many of us think it is better than L7 and many of the features that are missing are under work currently.

I would say that L8 does significantly MORE than L7 did. Not sure what kinks you are referring to. Typically there will always be bugs of sometime in software, especially in early releases.

But there ARE things that can be done. I mentioned three of them:

1. Change the fonts.
2. Adjust the scaling.
3. Revert to the old notes system (even if it's temporary)

I am looking for information that would help some of us with the transition. Surely someone somewhere knows what the default fonts were in Logos 7 (especially the notes font). I know there was no requirement to upgrade, but I wanted the new features, new engine and all the resources that came with L8 Platinum. I'm just not crazy about the new look and feel of L8 and several others feel the same way, as can be seen on this forum. Perhaps, if we could make some tweaks here and there, they would not be asking to "go back." As you said, L8 is definitely superior.

From a "look" perspective the options seem limited, quite a lot of things have moved and unfortunately that is simply something that we have to get used to. I'm sure someone at Faithlife had reasons for the changes in terms of ascetics and optimal workflow but so far all I'm doing is looking in the wrong place for things. This will change in a few days/weeks as I adjust its just the pain of change. The new UI may be easier to use for new users and that is probably the internal justification at Faithlife.

I would not expect Faithlife to add any significant ability to customise the UI as since Logos 4 they have been looking to minimise user configuration, as that reduces the number of differences between end user system and makes support easier. Basically if a system has too many configuration options there will always be a user that will find a combination that does not work properly. It's also a lot harder to get a user to reset to the default settings.

The scaling changes, as you have said, help get some of the space back and make the panels "look" a bit more like 7 in terms of use of space.

"Feel" is a bit different. If by feel you mean the way that some things work what I would call change in behaviour, I've made some changes to my layout, added a couple of Windows and now I can do with on or two clicks what I could do in 7 in one or two clicks for things like daily reading and accessing courses. The result is functional but is not yet as clean/tidy as my Logos 7.0 setup was. I expect some of this to improve with the planned updates and other tasks I will optimise as I sort out the best way to do them in 8.

My personal perspective on this is I don't mind changing but I don't want the process to be less efficient. Less clicks and key strokes is good, more is bad. At the moment I feel like Logos 8 requires more but a few useful tips are emerging like Mark Barnes pointing out that the documents view could be an open panel in a layout which might be useful for streamlining Document tasks. At the moment there are a lot of unknown unknowns for me with Logos 8 and Faithlife have not, in my opinion, to ease the transition for long term users.

Information about the fonts used can be gleaned from here...

I seem to remember that at some point Faithlife used the font 'Source Sans Pro', a font which I use a great deal.

This was/is set in the Program Settings, can't recall the default for Logos 7 as I set it to Century Gothic.

Logos 8 seems to be ignoring the setting though, I think Logos 7 might have as well.

This looks pretty good to me too, the problem is it gives me a ton of margin on the left and right side. If they could add more than 5 columns as a setting that might really clean it up for me.

Yeah, I actually mentioned that thread in the original post. But one side effect of reducing program scaling to 80% is that the right click menu becomes tiny.

I'm actually glad because there's more on the context menu at once so you don't have to scroll as much. And it takes up less space on the screen when it pops up.
