Headword search extension
In all the excitement in Logos 8, the Headword Search extension has been understandably overlooked. But as I've been requesting it for several years, I'm very excited by it.
It works like the Milestone search, but instead of restricting the search by a reference, it allows you to restrict your search to specific dictionary entries. So, for example, I might be interested in dictionary articles that discussed Isaiah 28:11-12 in articles about glossolalia (or speaking in tongues). I can now search for that:
<Bible Isaiah 28:11-12> INTERSECTS {Headword Glossolalia}
Note that bible dictionaries will often use different headwords to cover the same topic. Unfortunately, you need to specify all of them, as there's no wildcard matching or LCV support. You can use the Factbook to find out which alternatives you may need to include. This is a particularly complex example, which equates to this:
<Bible Isaiah 28:11-12> INTERSECTS ({Headword Glossolalia}, {Headword Tongues}, {Headword Tongues, Gift Of}, {Headword Tongues, Speaking In}, {Headword Tongues, Speaking With}, {Headword Speaking in Tongues}, {Headword Tongues, Confusion Of})
You can also specify non-English headwords:
{Headword greek:γλῶσσα}
The language identifier is optional, but might be useful to distinguish Hebrew and Aramaic, for example.
As you can see from the example above, you can search for phrases too. If so, don't surround the phrase with quotation marks.
{Headword Holy Spirit}

Thanks a lot, Mark! Great insight into a complex search matter - some time ago this would have made the Best TIP of the Week anthology!

The Best TIP of the Week anthology!
What happened to the TIP of the week?! I liked that and found it very helpful.

Hope they add all this funny search syntax to the Search Templates VERY VERY SOON.

The Best TIP of the Week anthology!
What happened to the TIP of the week?! I liked that and found it very helpful.
In fact they were called "TIP of the day" back then and then there was (the anthology) a "TIP of the Day: Best answers of the week" post by MJ
You may find them via Google (I once even wrote a very long TIP of the Day post about that...): site:community.logos.com intitle:"tip of the day"
Some 420 daily TIPs are collected here: https://topics.logos.com/Logos$2fVerbum$2fNoet_training$3a_Forum_tips - a thematically structured version that helps finding tips according to the Logos function (but not very up-to-date, I fear) is https://topics.logos.com/Logos_blog_tips

Thanks! I hope it makes a return at some point, L8-style!

Thanks for posting this, Mark. I had realised last night that we hadn't announced it and meant to post it today, but you beat me to it.

Unfortunately, you need to specify all of them, as there's no wildcard matching or LCV support.
Long-term, I think LCV is the right way to fix this.
In the meantime, though, do you think this is common enough that supporting comma-delimited quoted terms would be worthwhile?
<Bible Isaiah 28:11-12> INTERSECTS ({Headword Glossolalia}, {Headword Tongues}, {Headword Tongues, Gift Of}, {Headword Tongues, Speaking In}, {Headword Tongues, Speaking With}, {Headword Speaking in Tongues}, {Headword Tongues, Confusion Of})
could theoretically become:
<Bible Isaiah 28:11-12> INTERSECTS {Headword "Glossolalia", "Tongues", "Tongues, Gift Of", "Tongues, Speaking In", "Tongues, Speaking With", "Speaking in Tongues", "Tongues, Confusion Of"}
(And of course {Headword "Tongues, *"} could simplify that too, if wildcards were supported.)

Are we now able to search for all people in the book of Acts or all kings in the book of Daniel? Is this something that is in the mix?
All the women in the O.T?
I would like the results that you get in the concordance to be implemented in the search results. Then I can create a filter for these results.

+1 [Y] for comma-delimited

This isn't possible yet.
I certainly hope it's coming. It would be incredibly useful to be able to search for {Person WHERE Subkind = Women} OR {Person WHERE Role = King}. The data is already there, of course, but Faithlife would need to merge two datasets together to make the search work. Nonetheless, in my view, it would be very worthwhile.

Personally, I'm not sure this would make much of a difference, so only do it if it's relatively trivial.
LCV support would be great, of course. IMO wildcards would also be more useful than comma-delimited quoted terms: <Bible Isaiah 28:11-12> INTERSECTS ({Headword Glossolalia}, {Headword *Tongues*})

Wildcard support would be more beneficial than comma-delimiters.

I'd like to see a context-menu option to search for any word(s) within headwords.

I'd like to see a context-menu option to search for any word(s) within headwords.
And a bit similar: If I right-click inside a encyclopedia entry and then choose headword and then start a search in all resources, shouldn't the search now automatically search for instances where this word is a headword instead of just searching for the word in any text?

Yes, I was going to mention this, and forgot.

That would seem to make sense.

I think this qualifies as a bug as I cannot see why the word would be demarcated as "headword" from "selection" (mere text) in the context menu if it makes no difference to search from one or the other. I will start a new thread to draw attention to this.

"Headword" versus "selection" makes a difference for other actions (e.g., adding notes). It would make sense for search to also treat the two choices differently.
Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!

Very cool to be able to do this now. I would really like to become proficient in using this and your post is motivating me to try it out. Thanks.

This is exciting! Anything that would simplify the construction of the Search i.e. wildcard support, context menu identifiers and any other device that assists in construction would be welcome. Thanks, Mark

Is there any updates on implementing headword wildcard searching and/or comma-delimited?
Many thanks

Thanks Dave.
Love the fact that you can search lexicons for verses found within a lemma entry.

Just stumbled over it as I tried to seach for Headword(s).
Is there a new manual for Logos 10?

Thanks. I was also found out for German I need "Eintrag:".
But in the Inline search it lacks the autocomplete: So I type headword: (Eintrag:) and then they are listed alphabetically.
