Not responding

Still once in a while I get the "not responding" thrill. I would have thought this to have been taken care of years ago.

Here's where I got it as of late. Typed in a passage and clicking on the Exegetical Guide, there was this pause and the infamous "not responding" message up in the top bar.

Anyone else getting this and any wondering why we are still getting this age old problem even in Logos 8?

I haven't had the problem, but it might be possible to diagnose with diagnostic logging. If you turn permanent logging on (see here), when it happens again, don't restart Logos until you go to your log files, zip up your logs, and attach them to a new post here using the paperclip icon.

I'd think you'd also have a Logos log file. That would be more helpful. Let me know. (You can include all the logs since you last restarted Logos.)

Here are the most recent files in my folder (I'm on a PC like you).

That is what is likely to be of help. The key is zipping up the log file just after it hangs. That way someone reading it could see just where the hangup occurs without search a long file.

It also helps to document what you were doing when it hung up.

Hopefully Logos is running for you now. When the trouble re-occurs take the step above once you are sure Logos is not responding for a minute or so.

I'm right clicking on the file Mark but nothing in the options is giving me the way to zip it. Ok, I'll edit this. I think I see how to do it. Give me a second and I'll send you a zipped file as soon as I can created the problem again.

Here it is Mark. Let's see if I've got this right this time.

That's fine. That log file shows you app being open for about three days and being used periodically. It does show some long load times for some activities.

Someone may see something I don't that will help.

How long has it been since it was hanging up and what were you doing then?

I've just noticed this when opening a passage. This is something I very seldom do as I usually just start with a search and open several Dictionaries & several commentaries. I've not noticed the "not responding" when doing this. Can't remember exactly what I was doing when I saw this message last time.

Anything you can suggest I'll be listening. Thanks Mark.

No, in fact in some areas it has gotten worse ... it has to do with building tables in memory e.g. for the passage pick list or, my nemesis, for community tags. How often you hit it depends on what you are doing and if the temporary table got overwritten/released ... or something close to that. I've not tracked memory/storage to see what precisely is happening. The reason we get it is very simple - balancing speed against resource hog.

Interesting enough. So would it be fair to ask if this is an impossible glitch to fix & if so, how is it that other programs aren't doing that? Or is it which programmers are presently working on?

Thank you so much MJ.Smith for your present explanation.

I don't know - its a matter of the size of the pick lists and how quickly the algorithm can narrow down how much of the pick list has to be built. To estimate that I would need to know a great deal more about the structure of the data and indexes the pick lists are drawn from. I get the worst behavior on multi-part names for community tags; second worst but rarely more than once a session is the building of the scripture pick list with pericopes names.
