Canvas - great idea but not practical
Canvas is far too clumsy to use. It is very clumsy to resize the lines and boxes and even moving them around takes way too much time. If you want to make it useful, functionality that will autosize the graphic to fit the word or phrase with a point and click apply and click would make it useful. As it stands, it takes me more time to mark up a text than I really have so I will not be using it at this point.

If I understand correctly Canvas is basically a flavor of draw.io and is good at what draw.io is good at. Check some draw.io resources online to see how to most effectively use it.

Actually, I don't think that is correct. Draw.io looks like it is more for flow charts and that is not really the behavior in Canvas that is creating the clumsiness so much. It is working in the text with brackets, underline, squares, circles etc. Getting them sized just right and in the right location is very clumsy. It take so long that it is just not practical to use it.

I agree with your statement. I was using it to create a document for the youth bible class I gave last week and I felt I spent way to much time trying to line everything up. Sometimes I would try to make a line longer and it would grab something else or add an arrow. I would then move items around and it would mess everything up. I think in the long run it is a good tool to have and it should get better with time.
