Logos 8 Notes for Dummies

I don't anchor notes to my Bible or any resources (except Highlighting which is associated with the resource highlighted). The anchoring feature, key to many users, is in the way for me.

I would like Notes to be like an open Word document where I can cut and paste or save clippings from open resources or add notes of my own. Later I could find that Note because it had a name. The Logos 8 Note is a mystery to me with all the faceted browsing. Basically I don't understand how to find my nameless Note or see the content in a useful form after I luck onto it.

I have not found a tutorial yet that sheds any light onto my problem.

Should I give up on Notes and just keep Word open?

You can do this - create a New note within the Tool and it is effectively blank.

I assume you know how to do this but if not:

You can copy and paste text there, you can write text of your own.

Later I could find that Note because it had a name.

Two options here:

1) Type a descriptive title at the top

and then - later - search for that string at the top of the Notes Tool

In this case there were two notes containing that text string!

2) use tagging

and I can now filter on that tag

There are a few ways to find unanchored notes:

Type keywords into the Notes panel's Search box to find notes with matching content.
Use tags and use the Filters sidebar to find all matching notes.
Put them in notebooks and find them through the Notebooks or Filters sidebar.

None of these is mutually exclusive. You can use a combination of these approaches and use keywords, tags, and notebooks to drill down and find what you're looking for.

Thank you Graham and Phil. You did a good job of explaing how things work. I will continue to test the system and see if I can wrestle it into a place where it becomes useful for me. Unfortunately, I think I would need someone to talk me through this before I can make efficient use of it.

I want to back up John's request for someone to talk us through this.

Graham, your video is great but at the speed of light. A series of simple training videos talking us through this is what I want and honestly need.....trial and error is not the best way to learn.

Ideally, without having to purchase the training.

So, please help talk us through this new notes set up.

BTW, the above is very helpful. Nice to put it in a video as part of a 15 or 20 minutes of solid training on notes from the beginners point of view.

Same comment with Canvas.... Phil, you make wonderful presentations (mind map stuff) with Canvas and I can barely highlight a word.... a basic training video series there would also help me....

in any event, great tools..... Logos 8 is indeed helpful and good and worth it.... (that is my review)

Perhaps a series of webcasts that allows for the audience to post questions would be helpful to introduce and assist in the use of the new notes system as well as some of the other new features. The webcast could then be available for those who are unable to attend via the web.

I think this is an awesome suggestion! I think it would be good to repeat the webinar at 2-3 different hours of the day so that anyone from around the world would have the opportunity to attend and ask questions. Perhaps the Q/A part of all 3 could be spliced together for the recording. The recording should feature on the FAQ page, on a pinned forum post, etc, etc. I personally love the new notes but from feedback, it feels like more onboarding is needed.

Here is my two cents on Notes. If you are trying to use them for sermon prep/Bible study/seminary course, good luck. They really aren't very useful for that in my opinion. Far better to use OneNote (or something similar) for that.

However....what Notes is REALLY good for is attaching stuff to the Bible text, in essence to build your own study Bible. Why look up the definitions of important words when you've already done that? As you study through the text, just attach a note to a word with the definition that best makes sense to you. Did Charles Spurgeon make an excellent point on that verse you're studying in Psalms? Attach a note to the verse and paste Spurgeon's comment in. Do you really like The Message's translation of Acts 12.23? (which you should because it is so memorable!), just attach a note to that reference and copy the translation to it. Favorite verse? Mark it and comment why. Forget who exactly the Herod is in Acts 12.23? Find a short article on them and attach it to the word and next time you come through Acts when you hover over the word, you'll know. The possibilities are endless. So endless I have 17,500 notes attached to my Bible.

The new Notes is PERFECT for this. It is fast and simple and the organization comes from the text of the Bible itself.

For what it is worth, I am a subscriber to mpseminarsonline.com Yes it is a monthly fee, but well worth it IMO especially when it comes to the Logos 8 training. Morris devotes a great deal of time and material to the new notes feature. Each video is under 5 minutes. I begin my office time every morning by watching a few videos before starting my morning study. The notes have started to make sense to be thanks to a very detailed teaching from MP.

learnlogos.com is also a great resource, not a subscription service, and very affordable. It has the same format, generally, in that it is a series of short, to the point videos showing what is new in Logos 8. He is doing a pretty good job of updating what has already been released when Logos releases an update.

I suspect that FL wanted those unimplemented features to be a part of Logos 8.0, and we'll see them sooner rather than later, in upcoming 8.x releases.

Still, I wouldn't want to have to wait for videos to be produced until all features implemented. I think there are enough questions that can be answered now, that would help us to be more productive, today.

Additionally, you can open the sidebar in your resource, click on the Notes tab and filter from there.

I agree. wouldn't it just be so simple as to give your note a title and add what ever you want to that particular note. but I guess that would be too simple
