Feature Request - Custom Workflow Kind

I am currently working through creating a detailed workflow according to an Eight-fold method of sermon preparation. At the moment, the workflow editor forces the user to select a certain workflow kind. This is good for certain tasks, but is quite limiting for a large task such as this methodology. To be able to have a 'blank' workflow kind that had every available guide to insert in different areas in the workflow would be indispensable.

Under all workflows the options are:

Major Step (1, 2, 3...), Minor Step (1.1, 1.2, 1.3...), Text, Expandable Text, Question/Answer, Share Text, Share Media.

Biblical Word:

  • Original Language Translation
  • Lemma
  • Textual Search
  • Senses

Biblical Reference (So far the best option):

  • Read
  • Atlas
  • Biblical Events
  • Biblical People
  • Biblical Places
  • Biblical Things
  • Commentaries
  • Important Passages
  • Cultural Concepts
  • Illustrations
  • Important Words
  • Lemma In Passage
  • Literary Typing
  • Parallel Passages
  • Concordance
  • Figurative Language
  • Text Comparison
  • Thematic Outlines

Biblical Place:

  • Atlas
  • Dictionaries
  • Events
  • Lemma
  • Related Verses

Biblical Person

  • Dictionaries
  • Events
  • Lemma
  • Related Verses

Biblical Event (Same as Person)

  • Dictionaries
  • Events
  • Lemma
  • Related Verses

    Hi Connor,

Welcome to the forums. I'm just a user, so this isn't an official answer. But I'm not sure exactly what you're asking for.

As an example: if you run a Workflow on a Bible Reference, there is the option for a Biblical Person section where the various people mentioned in the passage are listed. Are you suggesting that for each of those four people you'd like to be able to run some of the Biblical People workflow tasks (dictionaries, events, lemma, related verses) within your current workflow? Or are you looking for something else?

  • Mark,

Thank you for the kind welcome. What I am looking for is to have ALL of the available guide options in one workflow. Currently, there are options that are restricted to reference, word, place, and event/person. Reference is the most versatile, but there are still missing options. I hope that makes sense. I tried to be as complete as possible in the original post.

What I am looking for is to have ALL of the available guide options in one workflow.

But they already are (kind of).

For example, Logos has a database of every Biblical Place and Person and Event, and the Bible reference where that place/person/event is mentioned. So if you start with a Biblical Reference, then the Biblical Place section will list all the places mentioned in that passage. And if you start with a Biblical Place, then the "Related Verses" section will mention all the Bible References that occur in that place. It's effectively the same section, just working in the opposite direction.

The only section (I think) that could usefully be added would be adding Dictionaries to Biblical Reference. Indeed, this should be straightforward for Faithlife because of the new Headword search extension.

When I think of other sections, I can't logically visualise what they would look like. For example, "Figurative Language" would make no sense to me if I started with a Biblical Place, Person or Event. What output would you expect in that scenario?

  • Mark,

I am familiar with that method of exploration and research but the reference report would still be missing:

    • Original Language Translation
    • Lemma
    • Textual Search
    • Senses
    • Dictionaries
    • Related Verses

I came here searching for a work around to be able to do exactly what you've suggested. Thank you!

What I am looking for is to have ALL of the available guide options in one workflow.

You lost me in the first post. The guide options all require some sort of input - a Bible reference, a place name, a person name - that is required for the guide option to do anything. No input of the right form, no output. May I suggest that you think of it another way. Is this perhaps a doable option to give you what you want:

In the main workflow, create the possibility of generating subsidiary workflows e.g. in the Passage Exegesis have a step that allowed the creation of one or more Word Studies subsidiary workflows. Or in the Passage Exegesis, have a step that allowed the creation of one or more Biblical Person Studies subsidiary workflows; another that permitted Bible Place Studies ...

IIRC this has been requested as I describe it by someone else. I would think it has a reasonable chance of getting support.

Is it possible to find out if this has gone ahead?  I am not looking for something for sermons, but I am sure this hierarchical approach would suit other structured study needs for others as well.

It could even help free form study, or possibly group mind mapping of bible linkages. It is similar in a way to how our brains work.

    Regards,
    Rose

  • Honestly, I found other ways of working around the 'missing' features. I haven't thought of how it needed to be changed and just worked with what we've got. But other than that, I've heard nothing about how my original request could be or would be addressed. Thanks for the reply, happy studying!
