Multi-coloured search highlighting works for OR and AND searches. But it doesn't work when you use a comma in place of an OR. In that case all the search highlights are the same colour.
This is by design. The comma operator creates one search term. To create separate terms, you have to use the OR operator.

I could see how it could be useful to have the comma list the same color and the OR separated list different colors.
I'm not sure I understand this. There is no practicable difference between the following:
Most of us have been using commas as a shorthand for OR since 4.0 was released! Should we stop doing so?
Thanks for that post, Todd. It crossed with mine, and explains what Melissa meant. But even if it's not a bug, it is a design inconsistency which probably ought to change.
I would agree that:
who, whoever, whom
should be coloured as three terms ie.
who OR whoever OR whom
But that
(who, whoever, whom) BEFORE you
should be coloured as two terms, similar to
(who, whoever, whom) OR what
