BUG: Elongated command box
I generally like the UI changes in Logos 8. However, as many users have noted, menus and buttons tend to eat up more space. This certainly applies to the command/search box. Does it need to be this wide? It leaves less room for the toolbar (which is cramped enough as it is).
It does not need to be wide for short commands and long ones don't fit anyway resulting in a drop-down that again, makes excessive width unnecessary. I am not sure what other users are doing but I can't imagine that most power users (who are more likely to write long search strings) would want to do that in the command box rather than invoke first the search window. So again, is this width really necessary?

I figured out what triggers the widening (and shortening) of the box. The box adapts its width to that of the drop-down suggestion text that corresponds to one's query. So, a short command like "Go to Mark 14:1 in preferred Bible" will have little effect. "Open Passage Study Layout to Mark 14:1" will widen the box a bit. "Open Word Biblical Commentary, vol 34b: Mark 8:27-16:20 to Mark 14:1" will widen it even more.
After the command has been used, the box does not return to its initial size. However, entering a shorter command (like my first example) will cause it shorten again.

Please turn the auto-reader off so that you will read rather than hear. [;)] This not only is working as expected but also as designed. I find the wider box useful.

I agree that the auto-widening is helpful, as it would be frustrating to not see the remainder of a truncated command.
Perhaps if the shortcut bar eventually supported drop-down shortcuts, it would free up more of that limited space.

Several people have suggested this and I see no reason it couldn't be done except that "afterward" is surprisingly difficult to define.

Perhaps definition could start with the following question for the fans of the widening box: what use do you have for it and does this use require the elongation of the box to persist?
If usefulness is only instant, then it would seem that once the command has been run, there should be no need for the box to remain elongated. That would be what "afterward" is (in a Newtonian sense).

Often the reason for a very long title is resolved only by the portion on the far right - volume number, glossary, clause visualization etc. So often, what I want next requires only a minor modification to the last two or three words. Example:

Because if i've opened the clause analysis I'm apt to want to open the Glossary rather soon.

OK, I get it. Now, all you really need is to refocus in the command box to see all matching options again, right? So, this does not require the box to remain elongated. If so, then I would suggest that focus be the deciding factor. When one "leaves" the box, as it were, it should return to its default size.
I mean, it seems to me that it is a bigger problem that one's toolbar remains significant decreased in size until another query is done from the command bar than to have to click into it to see similar titles relisted.
It may be convenient from the standpoint of those who use the command box in this way, but surely it should not be expected of users to have to type in a shorter command to be able to see their full toolbar again!

I agree except that I don't expect to be able to see the full toolbar.
This is a case where I don't care which way it works; for myself, it is an even trade off. I just want both sides to understand that there are advantages and disadvantages on both sides ... that what works best for them is not necessarily the best for everyone. My personal preference here also leans towards the multi-line shortcuts bar as implemented in L3.
