What version of the Bible are you planning to read in 2019?

Last time I read the Bible in a Year was 2006. I read 3 bibles at the same time: the KJV, the NASB and the Apostles' Bible. I compared the readings of each. In the OT I had two translated from the Hebrew and one from the Greek. In the NT I had one each from the TR, Majority and the Critical text translated into English. I have not had time to read the Bible in a Year since as I am still reviewing the notes that I left for myself in that reading.

I have read NIV, ESV and CSB in recent years so it is time for NASB. I am willing to give it a try since I have the Paragraph version. The non-paragraph version was a show stopper because I don't like a new line for each verse.

I too read a new version each year. This year it will be the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) using the M''Cheyne reading plan because it brings you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice. My routine is to read through the text in the selected translation, highlighting selections for further study in multiple translations using the text comparison feature. I decided on the CSB this year because our pastor favors that translation.

David, your reading plan sounds amazing. I hope I didn't imply that I thought that one should read the Bible through in a year. For the last few years I've also added reading my Greek NT through in a year and last year I did it out loud which was a great exercise as I seldom hear it spoken. I'm not as good at Hebrew but this year I've decided to try to read at least one verse a day although I have not decided how that is going to work.

On the subject of reading the Bible through in a year, a number of years ago I found that it was become too rote for me as I'd done it each year since I was 14 years old so I stopped reading for 3 or 4 months and just did sporadic reading. I was so hungry to read it through again that I made it a goal continue. Whatever keeps us in the Scriptures and, more importantly, close to Jesus is best and each of us must determine what that is.

Several of my church friends do read the bible each and every year. I have done it twice [read the Amplified Bible the first time]

Over time I have added verses from the Jesuit Douay-Rheims Pre Bishop Challoner and the NET versions [and others] to my notes from my prior study so I have keep active.

I do teach the everyone at some time needs to read the whole Bible for themselves from cover to cover. You can not take somebody else's word: you need to see it for yourself.

I'm also starting to read the REB with Apocrypha on a two year plan.* I've read the NEB before, long ago. I'm doing the REB now mostly for variety and to see what they did with the rearrangement of verses in some places in the OT. I've got it in a multi-view layout with the NEB and the NASB (for literalness and quick access to the underlying text). I do try to read the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonicals once every few years.

*I'm also close to completing a (slightly less than) two year project of reading a commentary along with each book of the New Testament; I just have John's letters and Revelation left. That, by far, has been the profitable thing I've ever done in terms of personal Bible study. I've been able sample a lot of different commentary sets due to Faithlife's sales and free book of the month samples. The best in my view has been the Pillar New Testament Commentary. A number of times after reading a random volume I don't have in a set, I wished I had just read Pillar instead.

The experience has been so enjoyable that I plan on starting in the Old Testament right after I finish, though I don't have nearly as many OT commentaries.

Did you manually create the reading plan or are you using one of Logos' predefined plans? One thing I didn't think about when starting the 52 Week Reading Plan for the REB is that the plan does not include the Apocrypha. I may at some point do a reading plan for just the Apocrypha. I was supposed to read them in seminary but we have to read things on such a condensed schedule in seminary and I may have skipped most of those readings since we were never tested on them. Somehow the professor let one of the students talk him out of including the Apocrypha on the final exam (it wasn't me lol). It saved us time and stress during finals but probably did us a disservice in the long run. I was actually shocked that the professor actually agreed to that.

I would think that many of us on the forums discipline ourselves to read through the Bible in a year. I know that this has been my practice since I was a young man. Over the past number of years I've made it my goal to read a new version every year. I just finished the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) in 2018 and would highly recommend it to anyone who has not read it. But I have not yet decided what version to read in 2019 and was wondering what others are planning.

It is encouraging to hear others with the desire to continually read the bible each year. Though I have read through the bible over the past several years, it is only this year I thought about reading in a different translation. I'm a little slow to change I guess. So after reading the ESV, I am starting the NIV.

A side question, how have you been able to encourage, challenge or inspire some one else to begin reading the bible yearly?

One of the things that I often encourage those I teach to think about is the fact that we live in a world that has unprecedented access to the Scriptures and yet research seems to show that many Christians are biblically illiterate. We have no excuse with free versions available in most languages and even if someone can't read or doesn't like to read they can listen to it. If the Bible is truly God's message to us would not the most basic of things simply be to read it entirely?

Thanks for sharing Graham. I can imagine that it would be powerful. There definitely needs to be a tension between reading broadly and slowing down and reading meditatively. Personally, I find that working my way through Greek and Hebrew slows me down which is a good thing.

I read through the NET bible last year with my Mom and we really enjoyed it. We liked having the notes available when there is something in the text that puzzled us or wanted to find out more about. I would really like to see this in a reverse interlinear.

2018: LEB last year with NKJV and NIV for reference as well as BKC and NBC as side dishes.

2019: NLT. I am not a fan of it, so this is a spiritual discipline, and so far I am enjoying it very much. Alongside, I am reading devotional commentaries--presently "Opening Up Genesis" by K. Sttassner and ECB (Eerdman's) as a side dish.

Three years ago we started a Bible Reading Challenge in our church where folks committed to a Bible reading plan and were accountable to follow through with that plan..it has helped us to grow as a congregation. I am a very slow reader, so I follow a two year plan because for me, trying to read in one year always set me up for failure. I am now in year two of the HCSB.

Now, you asked a second part to the question, which is WHY I’m reading it.

I chose it because I study from the NASB, but enjoy reading from various, less technical versions. I always found the HCSB to be set apart from other versions in it’s language choices (i.e., the use of Yahweh instead of LORD), and in it’s translation philosophy (i.e. dynamic).

I should mention that for my Bible reading plan, I do not use Logos. I purchase an actual, in- your-hands, touch it-feel it, thumb-through-it-and-hear-the-pages-turn, crawl-up-on-the-couch- with-a-cup-of-coffee Bible.

So, one day I was at the book store and I stumbled upon this Bible https://www.christianbook.com/hcsb-study-bible-large-print-hardcover/9781433607479/pd/607479. I thought it was so well laid out that I bought it. It was on my shelf for a couple of years and so when it came tme to read another Bible, I chose that one.

Someone above mentioned the NLT. You know, I struggled with it as well at the onset when I read it some time back, but the hard cover Bible that I chose was so enjoyable that it turned out to be one of my favorite read-throughs.

I find one year insufficient, so now opt for a two year plan, using The Gospel Coalition's plan tied in with the two books "How to Read the Bible for all it is Worth" and "How to read the Bible Book by Book" and the Bible Knowledge Commentary. When reading the Psalms I also use NIVAC, so looking forward to volume 2 coming soon. Unlike Cynthia, I could not manage this with a dead tree version of the Bible. But it works really, really well on Logos. In coffee shops I read monographs on my iPad, or listen to mobile ed lectures on my ear buds, depending on my mood.

In terms of version, I use ESV. Have tried other versions, but after a few days I get frustrated, give up and go back to my favourite ESV. Only for more detailed studies do I consult other translations. Perhaps I am just an old reactionary!

Thanks for your explanation. I totally understand reading over two years. I naturally tend to read quite quickly so my challenge is often slowing down and letting the truth of a passage sink in deeply.

I am now in year two of the HCSB.

Personally I've not found this to be the case but I hear lots of people express this. The newest trend I hear is young people reacting against everything digital and turning to paper again but I can't imagine that becoming a long-term trend.

I don't want to speak for Myke but sometimes people use CSV to stand meaning "Christian Standard Version" although I think most people would say "Christian Standard Bible". Of course it could be a typo for ESV.

Its important getting value from the Bible you read - though my preference is always the King James Bible - and reading plans do help. Rather than simply reading the Bible from cover to cover, a friend of mine took to writing out every word of the Bible by hand and has done this a couple of times. He said this had the advantage of slowing his reading and allowing him to take time with the text. He told me he felt real spiritual benefit in doing this. Of course this approach could be assisted using a reading plan too. Keep well Paul
