Home Page of Logos 8

I have Logos 8 and do like this version. But I'm very disappointed in the home page. To me it seems that all Logos wants to do is sell something. I loved the Logos 7 homepage because it had a good balance of sales and showing you articles about different books in your Library. Many times it would highlight something in one of my books and I could hardly wait to read that book. I see very little of this in Logos 8. I would like to see more of this. I do see where The Bible Study magazine is highlighted a lot, but that's about the limit.

My suggestion is to once again incorporate the books in our Library on the homepage. Used to I could hardly wait to read the homepage to see what book it was highlighting. I really miss that feature.

A lot of us miss these features. Faithlife has been rebuilding the homepage from the ground up to improve it and are working on bring more exciting features like this to the new homepage. Hopefully, we'll see some of this soon.

10. Resource excerpts: There are no longer resource excerpts on the Home Page. We’re exploring ways to show selections from resources in the future.

An alternative is dragging fsd command to create a shortcut

Click on fsd shortcut opens a random resource to a random location (similar to "your library" snippets on Logos 7 Home Page)

Please elaborate what book excerpts were helpful. Faithlife had several questions in a different thread:

Dream with me a little bit here. We removed excerpts because we did hear from many users that our content seemed random and unhelpful to them.

What if we brought it back... but smarter.

One thing we'd like to explore is introducing excerpts of content that are bubbled up by things like "commonly cited", "most highlighted", popular topics, commonly used media or Popular Canvases and Workflows.

What kinds of content would you like to see? How would you like us to organize it? When did you find yourself looking for content to read and in what contexts?

Also, some other random Qs for you: did you fire up the app with the sole purpose of reading excerpts-- or did you just come across it while doing Bible study?

I try to read and study my Bible every single day. Usually, during this time I always go to Logos. One of my favorite things to do is to read the Home Page of Logos. Many times I would see a little blurb or article about one of the journals or books that I had in Logos and would have to go read more about that article.
Examples: The articles about Oprah Wynfrey and New Age. This was in about 3 journals in Bibliotheca Sacra volumes and also it's in the Christian Apologetics Journal Volume 8.
Another article, on the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, with a great chart of this division. Bibliotheca Sacra Volume 137, 548. There's at least 3 journals in Bibliotheca Sacra on this. I'm not sure which one of the journals has the table. I just printed it out and didn't document it but I could find it.
Then maybe there was an article on orphans and widows. I'd go to the book "Orphans, Widows, the Poor and Oppressed: God Cares About the Needy. Do We?" by Derek Prince
An article on Defective Dating found in Biblical Counseling, No. 22, Winter 1998, p. 31-36.
An article in Pastoral Pensees, "Seven Reason You Should Not Indulge in Pornography" by Andrew David Naselli in Themelios 41, No. 3 (2016): 473-483
A book on "Prayers That Outwit the Enemy" by Chuck D. Pierce and Rebecca Wagner Sytsema, p. 41...

Then a blurb about a Christmas article. This was in Discipleship Journal, Issue 50 "The Guilt of Christmas Past" by Nancy Tester.
Another article, "What Draws Others to Me?" Maybe it would say something like "Understanding what people like about you and why." This is in the book "Be a People Person" by John C. Maxwell.
Another article might would be on how to work with a difficult teen and then would cite a book like "Counseling Angry, Unmotivated, Self-Centered and Spiritually Indifferent Teens" from The Journal of Biblical Counseling, No. 3, Summer 2005: 46-56

Another article by D. L. Moody says: "I can imagine when Christ said to the little band around Him, ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel,’ Peter said, ‘Lord, do you really mean that we are to go back to Jerusalem and preach the gospel to those men that murdered you?’ ‘Yes,’ said Christ, ‘go, hunt up that man that spat in my face, tell him he may have a seat in my kingdom yet. Yes, Peter, go find that man that made that cruel crown of thorns and placed it on my brow, and tell him I will have a crown ready for him when he comes into my kingdom, and there will be no thorns in it. Hunt up that man that took a reed and brought it down over the cruel thorns, driving them into my brow, and tell him I will put a scepter in his hand, and he shall rule over the nations of the earth, if he will accept salvation. Search for the man that drove the spear into my side, and tell him there is a nearer way to my heart than that. This is just a short view of things I've discovered and enjoyed in Logos and many times it was with the help of the Home Page.

I'm not sure all of these were on the home page, I'm just giving examples. I could go on and on. So many times I've been blest by info in Logos. and would use these tidbits of knowledge in my teaching.

I usually peruse the whole homepage. Almost every day I look for content to read because I have so many books in my library (over 5,000) that I forget what all is in there. And I get so excited when it leads me to a great Bible truth, article or story.

Bring it back and make it smarter. I'm all for that.

I agree. I liked the old home page with its random articles.

I miss very much the functionality of the old left-hand pane. I use a lot reading plans. I don't just want to know that I've "completed my reading for the day." I want to know where I am in the book and what the length of the next couple days' readings are. It was good to be able to click on the plan name and open the document. Same with the lectionary feature.

As soon as I could, I switch off all the homepage advertising and FL blog feeds as they're not vetted. Now I can't even go back and see what all the options are; the menu gets cut off:

Last week, for the first time ever, I set Logos to open directly to a layout instead of the home page. It's nice to look at but pretty much useless to me now.

Sorry to get into the conversation that was not for me.

I really like the examples you gave, and I am just curious if you keep a spreadsheet of them (as in what is about and where to find it)?

If you do, have you thought of sorting them by topic, and have you thought of sharing them?

If you are keeping them in other way, (e.g. favorites), Do you organize by topic or reference or both?

I used to make a small screen capture of the excerpts, and archive them in a folder. So technically I can find the resource and place, but I only did with the ones I found particularly interesting, not with all.

Thank you for your kind comment on the examples. I like your idea of doing a screen capture. I might start doing that.

I started keeping a spreadsheet in Excel about 6 months ago. My headings are Topic, Source, Title of Book or Journal, Author, and Comments. I probably need to refine this even more. So far I have 128 entries in this spreadsheet. With excel you easily sort by any of the headings at any time. I need to go more in detail on my comments like the Biblical Counseling index does below.

Another big help I received from one of the men at Logos was an index to the Biblical Counseling journals or articles. He gave me a web address where I could download an index to all of the articles. It is 162 pages long and it is extremely helpful with counseling. It gives the Title of the Article, Author, Volume, Issue, Theme, Page, and a thorough description. I really use it. I have a girl that I'm mentoring now and it has been very helpful in counseling her. I think every pastor should have the Biblical Counseling journals because they are extremely good. It covers many problems that people of all ages deal with, very thorough and very good.

I would be more than happy to freely share these materials with anyone that wants them. I'm all for sharing the gospel and helping others.

It gives the Title of the Article, Author, Volume, Issue, Theme, Page, and a thorough description.

Search idea is looking for a word in the Title of an Article OR Chapter with proximity to other word(s) in Title OR start of writing. For example, can search for addiction in Title (Heading OR Large Text) with proximity to (counsel OR confront OR biblical)

([field heading,largetext] addiction) WITHIN 11 WORDS (counsel,confront,biblical)

Another big help I received from one of the men at Logos was an index to the Biblical Counseling journals or articles.

Counseling Interactive with facets would be awesome.

Many thanks for the links you sent. I really like them. I have the June Hunt counseling journals and did not know about the journals that you sent with your links. I'll have to try and figure out how to order them, because they look so good. I don't really consider myself a counselor but it seems as though I'm involved in a counseling situation many times.
