Please help me with the different way the article is treated in these two places. One treats the article as separate, the other duplicates the word following it. But they both are the same Strong's number.

With a reverse interlinear you can see where original language words are translated or not translated. The Greek word order in your 1 Peter 3:13 (KJV) is literally "the good followers be". The cell for "good" in  KJV shows that the article (G3588) is ignored, but the ESV treats that differently, as "what" translates the article. The article has alternate morphologies, hence the two you see there. The repeated Sense "good (moral concept)" appears to be a mistake if you look at "harm" earlier in the verse.

In Mt 12:35, the article needs to be translated with "good" as the Greek words describe "man" i.e. "a good man" or "the good man", as opposed to "that which is (the) good".

See the Interlinear wiki article for an explanation of the notation. Unfortunately, usage varies between translations, and not simply because the KJV tradition used a different Greek text to modern translations.
