Jesus Coming from East?
A friend texted me and wanted know if Jesus is coming from the East when he comes. I've been searching for this in the Scriptures and have not been able to find the answer yet. Can anybody tell me the right search to use? Thanks.

I would ask you friend to define 'East' in terms of the Cosmos.

The person was probably referring to Matthew 24:27: "For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man."
They should note that the point of comparison that Jesus draws here is not the direction, but the fact that it can be seen even far away.
There is actually a cult in China (and now some other countries) that claims that that Jesus would come back to China (because it is in the East), and in fact has already come, but this time as a Chinese woman (she actually lives in New York now, as she had to leave the country). Well now, Mr Binks. A conumdrum for you. The Parables of Enoch were probably written a bit earlier than the gospels (same use of Son of Man, etc). And their GPS uses the 'extreme ends of the earth' (4 of them). Not to mention 'cosmos' was the known/civilized world. I always thought Paul had to have known of the tin mines in England, but expected the really-soon end ... the poor English bloaks were on their own?
Returning to east, I doubt one can say the lightning example is necessarily distance. Though I assume the lightning referred to desert dry winds coming into sea moisture in the highlands. In the same Enoch (also used by Jude), the judgement gates to heaven are in the east (as also the various trees, life, etc that James refers to). Hinting also to the imagery is the use of the stars/angels (thousands and myriads).
So, indeed, look to the east for any unexpected clouds.

I believe it has more to do with Ezekiel 10:18–19, the prophet sees the glory of the Lord leave the temple through “the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house”; the glory then moves east of the city to the Mount of Olives (Ezekiel 11:23). Later, Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord return to the temple via “the gate facing east” (Ezekiel 43:1–5). Since Jesus is the glory of God some have said he will return from the east to enter the temple mount. Which is why the eastern gate was sealed up by the Muslims centuries ago.
