Snapshots in L8/V8
I've looked in Verbum Help, but I'm still not entirely clear on what all causes snapshots to be taken and saved in the Layouts dropdown menu. Would someone please spell this out comprehensively for me? Thank you.

Snapshots have been around since L4. When you close the program a snapshot ofthe screen layout is taken. For example, if you close the program with no resources open, it will take a snapshot of your blank layout. If you close the program with a bible and a commentary open, it will take a snapshot of that layout. The snapshot at the top is your current layout. That is where you name and save that layout permanently. The program will remember up to ten snapshots, which reflect the layout state the last ten times you have closed the program.

This is an accurate but incomplete description, because the program takes more snapshots than these.
I will also note that if the program crashes, it does not take a snapshot (at least some of the time; this happened to me earlier this week).

I misspoke when I said it was limited to ten snapshots. I believe that was accurate when the feature was first released back in L4. To be honest, I never really pay attention to the snapshots, and use this feature only to save a layout.
It sounds like your knowledge of this feature is complete, but that you may be experiencing problems with the way it is working for you. If that is the case perhaps there are bugs you can isolate and report..

These are called "Application Closed".

When you switch layouts, a snapshot with the "Snapshot" name is created so you can return to that layout.
In general, Logos will use the latest "Application Closed" when starting. But, if Logos crashed after loading a particular "Application Closed", it will not use that layout when it is restarted; it will use the previous "Application Closed" because that would be safe. So, if Logos took a snapshot when it crashed, it wouldn't be used when restarted.
