Not Enough Storage Space?

I got a new laptop, HP Stream. Has a 32 GB hard drive. I'm installing Logos, and it stops indexing because it says I don't have enough disc space. It says to check that I have at least 1GB free, then restart.

1. There is 2.3GB free, so why won't it index if it only needs 1 more?

2. Does "restart" mean close Logos and restart it, or restart the computer?

3. Is there a way to deselect collections or resources from my library that I don't use?

I always thought that it needed at least 1GB in order to index and prepare files. I think you may need far more than 1GB to finish your installation, depending on your library size.

Regarding, deselecting, yes, that is done through Settings. You used to could only do 1 at a time, but now maybe it is 10? Someone else will add more info.

Not in Logos 8.2, but Cloud Resources is being beta tested in 8.3.

Either way, you'll be seriously challenged to get the desktop version of Logos to work well (if at all) with only 32 Gb SSD. Indexing will always use a lot of temporary space while building the indexes.

At least 1 Gb free is a minimum requirement, but it needs more than what you have free. Disk space requirements are very dependent on the size of your library, and vary greatly. Even more disk space would be required if you plan to use features like the Concordance tool.

If an alternate laptop (with at least 128 Gb SSD, but 256 Gb would be better) is not available, you might want to look into the Logos web app (which keeps all your resources online). The web app isn't as functional as the desktop platform, but FL continues to improve the it and add more functionality.

There was much more storage available when it began downloading, then once it was all downloaded there was 2.3gb left and it stopped indexing saying it needed 1gb free. I don't know. There's nothing on this computer but the operating system and whatever other stuff it came with. Kind of feel like I wasted my money now. 32GB hard drive, and more than half was full upon purchase

I found the way to remove books from the library, and I see where the article in wiki says I can select multiple, but it won't let me do multiple, only one at a time. Then it froze, and now Logos won't open again. super

There was about 17gb of free space when I began downloading. The last time I put my library on a computer it took up about 10-12gb of space. I don't understand why there isn't enough space. Is Logos 8 just that much bigger?

I'm coming to the conclusion that I am out of luck with this computer, which is really disappointing, because I'm replacing a broken computer so this is my only one. What about a high capacity SD card to increase storage and telling Logos to install there? Is that an option? I'm not too computer savvy

Indexing also requires a lot of memory while building the indexes. Since your laptop only has 4 Gb of RAM, it's also going to use more of that free disk space for the virtual memory/swap file which is managed by the OS, not Logos.

Are you within your return window for the hardware? There are many forum members who can help recommend what might work best, if you can provide more details about what you want to accomplish with a smaller computer.

Restarting the computer might resolve the problem, but the indexer is going to try to run in the background either way, to finish indexing, and if there's not enough space, that really needs to be addressed first.

If you still can't get Logos to run without freezing, you could try turning on diagnostic logging to help identify what it's getting hung up on. But I suspect going to run into recurring disk space problems every time a Logos app and/or resource update occurs (not to mention Windows updates).

Hopefully the Cloud Resources option will let you selectively install a minimum number of resources to get you up and running, and I hope that would be enough of what you need.

But if you're running out of space now, before you ever get started, it might be better to switch to a different PC which you could reliably use for years to come.

I've uninstalled Logos. I got the computer only a few days ago so I'm within my 15 day return window. I'm just operating on a very low budget but need something that works. I only use my computer for two things. Editing Word docs and using Logos.

What's funny is when I search around online for laptop models there are 32GB hard drives and then it jumps to TB's. pretty weird.

It's not officially supported, although users have gotten that to work.

However, Logos is extremely disk-intensive, and you'd really want it to run on the faster SSD. You'll be taking a performance hit by trying to use a memory card.

An SD card worked for me with one of those small laptops. The issue is not storage capacity anymore but processor speed. It takes a lot of time to index (more than 24 hours).

Processor speed is one factor, but SD cards are slower than hard drives (they weren't designed for the type of work usually performed on a computer).

FAR better for all round use. The other one was really only useful for browsing, emails and occasional use of MSWord. Storage on as computer is very much like capacity in a freezer. It never seems to be enough.

One possibility is to buy an A2 card, explained there:

In that case, try to buy a microSD card designated with A2 class (explained in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_card#Class, under subheading “Application Performance Class”). This class is designed for running applications from it, which has much higher random IO speed (rated as IOPS) than those without this designation. IOPS is going to be much more important in Logos than throughput (Mbps.)

I guess ~64–128 GB of A2 class microSD can be bought around $30. But try only buying it from reputable store though. Fake cards are so prevalent and looks so real that even some Amazon sellers are selling some fake cards. The one I would trust would be like BHPhoto, BestBuy, etc.

Once you have that, if that fails again, you could consider increasing the swap space by pointing it to this external microSD. Swap space is a dedicated space on disk to functioned as virtual memory for the RAM to spill over. i.e. it functions as RAM and hence solve the RAM not enough problem. (but it is going to be very slow when it spills too much too swap, it can looks like it completely hangs but be patient for hours even for days depending on application.) I’m not familiar in how to set up swap on Windows, but this page seem to show how: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/increase-page-file-size-virtual-memory-windows, or just google any similar ones.

Why would someone want to wait for hours or days?

If a newly-purchased computer isn't up to par, it's probably not best to trade off one problem (disk capacity) for another (wall clock, latency).

Let's simply make sure that the new computer has a large enough SSD.

the suggestion is a possibility issue, not a usability issue.

The main point is many people would have thought it is impossible to install / run something when it is out of memory. But it is actually possible, but the penalty can be high. It is mainly because RAM has such a high IOPS performance that any other storage, even SSD, won't match (the relatively new Intel Optane is closer, but essentially is a commercial failure.)

And the comment "be patient for hours even for days depending on application" really depends on application, and I don't know what's that situation for Logos.

Example on why this might be useful (not for the general users here though):

I once tried to compile a Haskell program with a 1GB machine (Raspberry Pi if you know), for people who know Haskell they would know Haskell compilation can eats a ton of RAM, and the compiler actually ask for 1TB (!) of virtual memory regardless. So just for compiling it, one need to create a relatively large swap space, say 4GB on a microSD card. The compilation would be painfully slow because the IOPS on microSD is really low and hence the CPU is just mostly idling. So one do something else, and come back after days (no rush, I'm coming back next weekend to finish this weekend project.)

But once compiled, the program runs flawlessly. So this is one instance why a temporary use of swap space just to overcome a blocking step might be useful.

I personally really like to give low power machines a try and not let that go into waste. But I'm also guilty of buying new computers—shortly after I bought Logos 4 I bought a gaming laptop just for running Logos.
