Search Question Speaker vs. Writer

Is there a search equivalent for identifying a writer in the same way we identify someone as a speaker? Here's an example of what I ran came across.

I was trying to identify all of Paul's commands

I searched the ESV {Label command} INTERSECTS {Speaker <Person Paul>}

This search returned 24 results in 19 verses. All of the results were from Acts. In each case Luke is recording a command Paul spoke. However, I was expecting to get all of the commands Paul wrote in his epistles also.

So I searched {Section <PropositionalOutline = Command>} INTERSECTS {Speaker <Person Paul>} thinking this might be the secret syntax to return the results I was expecting.

This search returns 26 results in 18 verses. Again all results are from Acts.

I recognize that in his epistles Paul is writing rather than talking, but it seems a biblical writer should be deemed as speaking. Since that is not the case, is there a Writer equivalent to Speaker?

Also, I recognize that I could simply search {Label Command} and restrict the range to the Pauline epistles. However, that may also return commands spoken by someone else. An example would be when Jesus told Paul "do this in remembrance of me."

Not to my knowledge. You could accomplish this with labels but that would take a LOT of work. [:P]

You could do the search in the Pauline Epistles and add "AND NOT {Speaker <Person Jesus>}" to the search string.

That would remove those commands spoken by Jesus - it would leave commands spoken by others but I can't think of many instances of that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am in the process of identifying verses where Paul quotes a command spoken by someone else. So far, in addition to Jesus, I have Moses, David, and some others.

The Bible Browser tool might be helpful to you. You can filter to the books of the Bible authored by Paul and the Command label. Then you can see that there are a very limited list from speakers. You could probably use that list as an explicit exclusion on your search.

You can use the Bible Browser to identify them:

But again, that's only reported speech, not writing. To find when Paul quotes commands from others, I would suggest looking at the Intertext label.

Actually, while you're here, Andrew, it would be very helpful in this context to be able to add wildcards/headings in Bible Browser.

For example, in this case it wouldn't be possible to filter the Bible Browser to show all verses that have the intertext label — only those from a specific Bible book. The same with commands, etc.
