What is the function of "update active" layout

Hi,

I am confused..I have been using Logos for several years and created many layouts which I use over and over again...

I thought that after adding new resources or rearranging tabs, etc..that the update active would keep that layout current..

However,  I have noticed some inconsistencies...sometimes the layout returns to its the current version and sometimes it does not and I have to go to an "older" autosaved version to update this..

I normally use the update active button in the layout menu and then make sure everything is synchronized before closing.....this has worked for me with sometimes but is also not updating as I mentioned earlier..

I spoke with Logos support and the person stated I need to use "saved as named layout" and make sure I have typed the exact layout name if I want it update for new resources, new tabs..

Is anyone else having this issue?...I am now trying the keyboard shortcut instead of the "update active"

Thanks for your help

Frank

The Quickstart and Homepage Layouts do not update actively correctly. Only the saved layouts you named will update with update active layout. At least that's been my experience. For the Quickstart and Homepage you have to go to the layout name and right click then replace the layout.

    Matt,

Thanks for your reply..I rarely  use the quickstart and homepage layout ...so I don't believe that is my issue

I usually like to manually setup my layouts...

It would be nice if logos opened all my commentaries when studying a book...but I am not complaining ...I like the new organization of resources..

    That person is incorrect.

"Update Active" in the layouts menu should give you the result you seek. I use Cmd-Opt-L (Cntrl-Opt_L for that other OS). Has always worked for me.

Sounds like you need the passage guide and not layouts. In your layout you can make a custom guide that will access all your commentaries.

Question: Did you, some time prior, save the layout as a named layout?

When starting work did you open that named layout?

If you opened a named layout its name should appear on the top of the screen.  It will say Logos Bible Software - name of saved layout

I assume that you did but needed to ask.

In Tools > Program Settings, there are Startup options for loading your layout:

    • Most recent layout – local --> will automatically save your layout when exiting, and load it when you restart Logos.
This is the most efficient way to ensure continuity.
    • Most recent layout – any --> will load your automatically saved layout when it is shared between different installations.

The layout is saved as Application Closed, so it doesn't explicitly update your Named layout, but it has that name when it is loaded.

So you don't have to use "Update Active"  unless you want to save a specific version, and/or you

    • load a Named layout from the Startup options (or load a Blank Layout).

When you switch layouts, the current layout is saved as a Snapshot in the Layouts menu. You can rename this to be your Named layout.

    Yes—Several of them

When starting work did you open that named layout?

I open Logos to a blank screen, then select the layout I wish to use. I have placed the most common of them on the toolbar.

If you opened a named layout its name should appear on the top of the screen.  It will say Logos Bible Software - name of saved layout

    Correct

    Hi everybody,

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions...Jack Caviness you confirmed to me what I thought was the original function of "update active"...to keep any changes to my layout updated...

I try to be very careful about making sure that the right layout name is at the top of my logos screen...One thing I have done is when I realized  my layout was not current to what I thought I had saved....I then used a logos autosaved layout with an earlier timestamp...However, I  did not realize for a time that the autosaved layouts do not bring with them the name of my custom layout..so in that case I have to use "save as named layout" and make sure the layout name is the same

So for now I have going to use the keyboard shortkey to update my active custom layout

Yes I do open my layouts and make sure the name is at the top.....and that my layout has the same name as I was working on....See above where I have found some issues with using autosaved layouts..

    Again....thanks to everyone who replied

I did say "I assume that you did but needed to ask."   The first step in troubleshooting is to insure that the operator [[sometimes me]] did the simple things right.  Then we may need to find the limitations and work a rounds to get what someone else built to do the job we want  done.
