NASB 2020
As some of you may know, the NASB is coming up with an update early next year. When Logos gets to it, will the new update replace the NASB95, or will I have to pay for the new updated version and thus have two separate versions of the same translation?

It depends upon how the publisher deals with it... but in all likelihood, it is a NEW translation, a NEW resource, which will require a NEW purchase.

That means I’ll have 3 NASB versions- not sure I’ll be a customer have been using HCSB lately and it has quickly become my primary version

Being that the case, will I be able to transfer all my notes and highlights through my visual filter from the '95 version to NASB20 one without having major issues?
If serious issues take place through the visual filter, like repeating the same notes twice, three or even four times into the new resource, I wonder if the techs will be willing to look into it and find a solution?
Last time when I called, I was trying to transfer my notes from the NASB to the NKJV, but it was a mess, yet the techs didn't want to touch it because no one had complained about it before, and so they asked me to look in the forums for a solution but no one knew how to solve it.

Hi David: I tried to transfer all my notes through the corresponding notes filter from the NASB into the NKJV about a month ago, but in many places it doubled, tripled and even quadrupled the same notes in the NKJV.
When I called, I was told to look for a solution in the forums because it was the first time that anyone had complained about it (meaning, it wasn't that important since there were no requests from anyone else).
I'm bring this issue up with plenty of time to see if anyone can look into this issue before the NASB20 comes up.

It is important here to be technical. Using a the "corresponding notes" visual filter does not "transfer" the notes/highlights from one resource to another. Rather it merely allows you to see them in the other.
However, it should be pointed out that this is a moot point for some time.
1) The resource has not been released
2) It will take a while for it to be released in Logos after it has been released
3) It will take an even longer time for a Reverse Interlinear to be created.
In all likelihood, we are talking about 2-3 years away.

Funny that you said that because about a month ago I tried to see all my NASB notes in the NKJV once I checked off the corresponding notes. To my surprise, they appeared twice, three and even four times showing up in the same parallel verse. The same thing took place all over the bible. Sometimes just once, but for the most part I saw them being "duplicated" as rabbits.
So, without going into the future, what should I do now with this issue knowing the problem is taking place as we speak?
When I called the experts, the tech took a good look at what was going on, made a couple of calls and told me later they couldn't help me because no one had complained about it before. He then told me to go to the forum to see if anyone could help me out.
Two gentlemen took my case on, I believe you being one of them, but there was no solution.
So I abandoned my pursuit, but I know it will come back to haunt me once the new update takes place because I don't want to give up on my 26,000 plus notes that I have at the moment and start up all over again.

I am not sure what the problem was, but it is important to be precise:
- It may be that you are seeing the same note multiple times.
- It may be that you have multiple copies of the same note.
I understand that both of those appear to you as the same, but they are in fact quite different things. When I corresponded to you before you suggested that you "copied" the notes. If that is an accurate statement, then you have multiple copies of the same note. You should not do that again! The "corresponding notes" feature allows you to see the note attached to resource "A" in resource "B." It is not, however, copied to resource "B."

No, I didn't call them back because they told me right up front that the problem I had encountered has not been brought up before. They told me to look for a solution in the forums. Besides that, they already have a record of my "complaint."
If I call them back I'm sure they will give me lip service and tell me that "they will look into it."
Now. to clarify, the issue is that I'm seeing is that the same note multiplies in the NKJV, in the ESV or any major other translation that I choose to use the "corresponding notes" filter.
If I take the time to save one of the multiplied notes in the NKJV (as an example), then delete it, all the extra notes will disappear, including the original from my NASB. After that, if I paste the saved content of my note in the NKJV (as if was a new note), it will be remain as one note, BUT if I try to re-create it again on my NASB, it will immediately multiply in the NKJV as before.
This means that I cannot keep my original notes in the NASB if I take the time to remove the duplicate notes manually from the NKJV.
Does that make sense?

It sounds like the problem may be an understanding of where notes are stored, and how they are created.

It is not possible to create or store a note in any bible or resource. Notes reside in a notes database and are simply linked to a resource or resources. There are two ways to create notes in a Bible resource.
You can select a verse or passage in the bible and then create a note based on the selection. When you do that, the note indicator will only appear in that resource. However, if you go to another bible and select corresponding notes, the note indicator will appear as long as the selected verse or passage is present in that resource.
The other way is to link the note to a verse or passage reference. If you create the note that way, the note indicator will appear in any versified resource where that verse pr passage is present.
If you have created notes in multiple resources by linking them to a verse or passage reference, all those note indicators will appear in all versified resources. If you created multiple notes linked to a selected verse or passage, and have Corresponding Notes selected. all of those indicators will appear as well.
The important distinction is that a note is never "in" a resource, rather it is linked to a selected portion of a resource, or to a reference that may be included in multiple resources.
For Bible notes, I make it a practice to always create the note linked to a verse or passage. That way it does not matter what version of the bible I am working with.

I think you misunderstood me. When I make a note on a particular verse in my NASB, I can edit it, or delete at will. If I highlight it and copy it, I can make a blank note in my NKJV and paste the previous content.
OK, so if I transfer all my notes from the NASB to the NKJV through the "corresponding notes" filter, it will appear in the NKJV up to 4 times in some of the verses. After a careful look, the the "corresponding note filter" have multiplied the parallel notes all over the bible correspondingly.
Please note verse 1 and verse 2 have been transferred twice in each instance. I found in other instances that the same exact note has been "duplicated" three or four times.

It would help if you provided a screen shot of your Notes with no filtering - so that you see All (xxx results) at the top left, and nothing else (xxx is a number). Ensure that we can see the Type and Resource filters below it.
Also, the highlights in Eph 1, like IN CHRIST JESUS, IN CHRIST, IN HIM - do they come from the Highlighting tool, or are they a Visual filter for the resource?

Thank you Fred. I will look at the link you provided, but you know that the issue is not how I make my notes but how I transfer all my notes from one translation to another without finding out that the receiving translation has made duplicates and triplicates throughout the same parallel verses.

As I stated in my previous post, it is not possible (or necessary) to transfer notes from one translation to another, because notes do not reside in any of your resources.

JT, I did not copy or highlighted anything. the filter did it automatically once I checked off the appropriate box n the translation that appears on the right. Once I remove the check mark, it will disappear. By the way, I purposely blocked out all subtitles in the NT since none are inspired. ;-)

Fred, I have 26,000 notes on my NASB. My original intention was to switch to the NKJV and make it my preferred bible; however, I didn't want to start all over again with new notes and leave my 26,000 original notes behind. Now, since there is a filter called "corresponding notes, why not do it? otherwise, why is it there?
When I spoke to a Logos tech about a month ago, he never told me I couldn't or shouldn't do it. Rather he tried to find a solution, but when he couldn't solve the issue, he made an inquiry from other techs trying to find out if they had seen the same problem before.
But since no one has complained about this problem before, he said he couldn't help me, and suggested to see if I could find a solution in the forums by asking around whether anyone else had encountered the same issue before.

Let's say that I create a note in the ESV in Heb. 1:3, if I choose to, I can highlight my created note and click copy. Afterwards, I go to a different translation, find Heb. 1:3, create a blank note and then paste what I wrote in the original note from the ESV.
In your opinion, is there anything wrong with that?

This is definitely bad practice. If you really want a note to appear in another translation WITHOUT the corresponding VF (and it's a note on a selection), then simply add another anchor to the note (or replace the one you have). Identical note content should only ever exist in a single note.

See the highlighted, underlined italicized text. This is where you are creating your own duplicates. You should NOT "transfer" notes. By using CORRESPONDING HIGHLITES, you are able to DISPLAY the notes from one translation while reading another translation.
Since the ESV has a Reverse-Interlinear when you create the original note it is anchored to Hebrews 1:3. If you open any other translation that has a Reverse Interlinear and select the checkboxes.
EXAMPLE: I have never done any highlights or notes in my NKJV. You will see that by clicking the corresponding boxes in the visual filter dropdown of the NKJV, then I have the ability to DISPLAY notes/highlights that I made in other translations (ESV or NASB). Notice the yellow highlight of "an antitype" and the blue highlight of "the answer"

If it really is the "exact same note", then that note has (at least) two anchors. Please select all of verse 3 in the ESV then right click and from the context menu select "Open annotation(s)" and post a screenshot of the resulting Notes tool panel. If it is the exact same note, you'll only see a single note in the notes list with two or more anchors in the note. If, on the other hand, it is a "copy", then you'll see two separate notes. From the process you described before, I'm wondering whether the anchor that is obviously a text selection anchor was your original note, (now displayed via corresponding notes) and the and at the beginning of the note is one that you copied...(?)

I may be wrong and I suggest you call back to Customer Service and request that a Technician remote login to your computer to show you where the problem is arising. I would presume that the blue triangle at the beginning of v.3 in BOTH TRANSLATIONS is coming from the "Corresponding Highlight. I presume (and I may be wrong) that the 2nd triangle (before the word "and") in the ESV is because you copied and pasted into another notebook that is anchored in the ESV.

Thank you David. I will follow up with your advice, but I would like to tell you that I do not use the ESV and I have yet to read it or create notes from it.
I simply used the ESV as a prime example that no matter what translation I choose through the corresponding notes filter, some of the notes are either duplicated or triplicated throughout. I did not copy and paste anything; they just popped up as a duplicate.
Please note this other example. The NRSV is now on the right hand side. Verse 5 and 6 triplicated the exact notes from my NASB that only appears as one in each verse.

Reuben, please take a look at the screenshot above. The note from the NRSV is exactly the same as the other two. (from verse 5). Verse 6 has three notes also. So, whatever notes I have in my NASB, it duplicates or triplicates (not all them) in the parallel bible when corresponding notes are used.

When I created your note in Gen 16:5, NASB95 I observed the same "triplication" in the NRSV with Corresponding Notes. And it "duplicates" in the NKJV. The Note icon is what is actually being duplicated or triplicated, and it can happen whenever the translated text has more words than the original language text (which I show in the Inline Interlinear).
In the text for the Note May the wrong done me be upon you, notice that "May", "done" and "be" have a dot/period below them, meaning that those words were added to the translation for clarity. The Hebrew has only 4 words, and only those words are used to create the Corresponding note in other translations. So you will get multiple note icons in the NKJV and NRSV, because they have added words. It doesn't happen in the CSB, because the additional words "are responsible for" are linked to the Hebrew words via arrow markers (like that under "the" in the screenshot).
The text for the Note I gave my maid into your arms doesn't have added words in NKJV, NRSV and CSB, so the Corresponding notes appear as expected.
I hope that explains what is happening, and that it could be regarded as a bug (Faithlife may disagree).

You see, if you look under the Resource filter in the Notes tool, you will see all the bibles in which you have created notes. But you need to remove the Notebook filter from the screenshot which shows GLEANINGS OF GENESIS (click the x next to the notebook name at top left). The screenshot shows you have created 7 notes in the NKJV for that Notebook.

Getting back to THE NASB...I really hope they include the half-dozen or so corrections I've emailed them over the last decade. I've encountered a few others recently that I haven't sent in. I don't know when they will cease making such corrections, but knowing they will be updating soon gives me some reason to pass my suggestions along.
