Problems Syncing!

Just wondered if anyone else is having this problem.

I realised that I had a problem with syncing between Android and iPad, but now I have just discovered it does not work with my Windows laptop either.  I was reading a book on my laptop and decided to sit in the armchair and pick up on my iPad. However, when I opened the book on my iPad it opened to where I had last been reading it on that device, so I closed the iPad and tried my Android phone and the same happened there.

Anybody else experiencing this or is it just me?

It is definitely not just you Anthony but you uncover a dilemma that Faithlife has to resolve.

How does the program/app know if you are 'Studying' or 'Reading'. If you are studying you may have a resource open only to check a particular fact of explanation. For example a sermon prep session on your laptop may have a commentary open at Matthew and a personal devotion session may have that same commentary open at Isaiah.

You might be peeved if you returned to your sermon prep to find that your carefully set up and linked layout had jumped back to the Old Testament.

On the other hand if you are reading a book through linearly it can be helpful to be able to switch devices and have the book open at the latest reading page when ever you open the app.

What Logos needs, for many reasons, is to revamp the 'Reading Plan' facility. Among the features for allowing us to set reading sessions should be one that lets us mark a book as 'being read' and then automatically start a new session when the book is closed ready for picking up on an alternative device at the right place.

By the way there is a protocol that controls when books are opened at the last read place on a device and when they are opened at the last read place on another device but I don't remember the intricacies hence it doesn't help me much.

It is working as designed, so everyone is experiencing this!

Logos is a "research library," it isn't simply an "eReader." If it were the later, you would expect that the location would always sync across all devices.

Since it is a "research library," you have to take into consideration that users will potentially use the same book for multiple reasons. For example: A pastor who is working on his DMin may use the ESV for these "projects" concurrently: 1) Personal Devotions 2) Sunday Sermon 3) Research Paper 4) Wedding Devotional.

    Should the iPad sync for #1? #2? #3? #4?

My answer is that it should sync for all! However, to do so would require a new feature be added to mobile. At a minimum, FL would need to sync desktop layouts to mobile. In my opinion, a complete revision of function and terminology is required.

In the meantime: Syncing DOES work, but you have to follow strict procedure. The resource can NOT be open on the target device. For example, if you are reading on your iPad and go to your desktop computer, the resource cannot be in the layout. When you open the book from the library, it will open to the location last used across all devices (i.e. the iPad).

Of course, all of this is ridiculous. [:s]

    Hi JT.

I fully understand and agree with most of what you say.

However, there needs to be a way to pick up reading from where you left off on another device. A solution would be to give each resource a bookmark! Then, you would have the option to bookmark it if you wanted to so that you could pick up on another device. Simples!

The problem of syncing has been solved for me now. The books were being synced all along it was just that the info pane at the top of the page was showing the chapter that was last being read and not the chapter that it was actually showing.

There already are bookmarks (called "favorites") if that is the solution you want.
