Working OFFLINE with Logos 8

Help!  I am on a 6 day cruise with very limited Internet access.  I depend on using my laptop Logos 8.  When I tried to open it, it insisted I log in.  When the login fails due to lack of internet access, there is no option to work offline.  I know that that option existed in the past.

I worked out a way to login based on Sprint roaming from the satellite connection from the ship sharing my data connection from my phone,  Once I got logged in, then it stayed logged in after the phone connection went away.  But I am afraid to close my Logos app and I will have to go through that again if Windows 10 decides to boot.

I have set up a similar connection in order to send this plea for help, but I have no way to know what Sprint and the cruise line intend to bill me later.  Straight internet access is $29 per hour.  That is way too much and I'm hoping the roaming charges will be similar to European roaming charges I have encountered in the past.

Did Logos withdraw the ability to work offline?  I plan to be far away from any network or phone access in January when I go on a trip to train local pastors in Guatemala.  I will be in a world of hurt if I cannot use my Logos offline.

Please respond if you know a way to get Logos to work offline.

There is a requirement to log in once online - but after that it should work offline. This isn't a Logos 8 change - it was introduced some time during Logos 7

Is this the first time you have used Logos on this laptop?

I don't use public wifi or even a hotel's wifi, so I am frequently offline.  There are some features that are only accessible when connected to the Internet, but you should be able to use Logos offline.

@ Graham - so the option of installing Logos completely without the Internet no longer exists?  Was this change made to keep multiple users from using one account?

I used to use Logos quite often offline due to lack of internet where I live, so I don't wouldn't know why it's not letting you log on...

According to Andrew - https://community.logos.com/forums/p/147249/915103.aspx#915103 - it was to improve startup performance

No. One offline option is changing Program Settings "Use Internet" to No

After clicking application icon to launch on my mac, quickly held down command key until caused Sign In dialog box appeared:

On Windows, quickly after clicking application icon to launch, press and hold control key until Sign In dialog appears.

    Graham,

No, this is my primary Logos computer.  But I normally have wifi ability when I use it. I hadn't even considered trying to open Logos without internet access before I left home.  Now, I know to run some tests before my upcoming Guatemala trip.

    Keep Smiling,

I see they have offline access tied to "secret key strokes".  How helpful! [NOT]  I cannot imagine why "Work Offline" is not offered as soon as they notice that you don't have an internet connection.

Thanks to both of you for responding.  We have now reached a point in the cruise where we are in port every day.  I succeeded in leaving Logos open and using it continuously while offline.

    Regards,

    David

    Hi David,

I am sorry you have had so much trouble with this.  Holding down the Control key in Windows, or the Command Key in Mac, is a fallback.  It should not normally be necessary to use this fallback unless there is a technical problem affecting Logos.

I myself have often used Logos offline without any need to use this fallback.

Although Logos can be used offline, it is possible that there is an underlying technical problem that is only revealed once you go offline.  This could normally be fixed simply by repairing the installation or doing a quick re-install (no need to download all of your books all over again), or by doing system updates.  But of course you are not able to to fix this problem while offline.  But you may find that the fallback will work for you.

I recommend that anyone who is about to go offline for an extended time do a quick test.  Go into airplane mode and see if Logos still works.  If it does not, try repairing the installation, or doing a quick re-install, or running system updates, or contacting Customer Support.

gooday Joe, im so happy for you.

"I myself have often used Logos offline without any need to use this fallback"

perhaps you would like to share the secret to work offline without using your fallback.

as far as ive found out there is only 1 way to get there by holding cntrl key when starting logos.

there are many help pages on working offline but none say how to get there, so maybe someone could share the secret.

thankyou and look forward to an informative reply.

If you don't have an active internet connection, you can boot Logos and it will simply work without having to be online. You won't be able to sync (settings and such) to the cloud, and you won't be able to download new books or do cloud searches, but most of the program should still work.

To test this out, go into airplane mode or unplug your router and try to launch Logos.

This isn't something people normally wish to do at home when they do have a working internet available. It's just reassuring to be able to see that they'll still be able to use Logos if they go somewhere remote with their laptop where they have no internet access.

Was there some other reason you were trying to work offline on purpose (even though you did have Internet access), where the Ctrl- method was not satisfactory to you?

hi rosie, really appreciate your reply.

regarding:- Was there some other reason you were trying to work offline on purpose (even though you did have Internet access), where the Ctrl- method was not satisfactory to you?

yes there is as i was trying to follow the following instructions to do custom install of logos.

steps 1 thru 5 were successful, then stumped on the folloeing.

step 6. Start Logos and sign-in

      • initial sign-in will have to be performed online.
      • then select Work Offline.

how can i select work offline after i have signed in and im online? as you suggest its either one or the other.

there must be a command or button somewhere to select work offline as it says once im online?

or do i just pull the plug on the internet?

looking forward to your reply, regards, michael.

Welcome Michael! Sorry you are having troubles. [:s]

Lets start with a few things. First, it is typically best to create your own thread and to provide specifics about your situation. There are a number of reasons for this, including making sure that the original person who posts gets the specific help they need. In this case, this thread is about Logos 8. You should not be using Logos 8!

Please create a new thread and provide some more details.

      • What specific version of the app are you using? If you are not using the latest L9 or L10 engine, why not?
      • What specific OS?
      • Why are you trying to do a custom install? (sometimes knowing reasons can provide us with better ways to help)
      • Do you have links to the instructions you are using so that we are on the same page?

You could close Logos and then restart it with the Ctrl key held down. I'm not really sure what those instructions meant by putting those two lines right after the other.

Do you have links to the instructions you are using so that we are on the same page?

It looks like he's following the instructions in "Method 1" on https://wiki.logos.com/quick_installation_onto_multiple_computers

That Method is meant for computers that will be used exclusively offline. Is that what you're trying to do? Set up Logos on such a computer?

Dave Hooton might be the best one to answer this question, as he is the one who created that page of instructions and has done the most editing on it over the years. (Calling Dave!) I'm not sure it's up-to-date with the latest version of Logos, but Michael, we still don't know what version you are using, so that might be a factor.

And as JT pointed out, this should have been a new thread. Piggy-backing onto old threads with a new question, even if it is tangentially related to the original question, is usually not the best form. But what's done is done. We can continue here. Or you could start a new thread and refer back to this one with a link. (You can get the URL for this thread by right-clicking on the "Working OFFLINE with Logos 8" part of the "breadcrumb" at the top, "Home>General>Working OFFLINE with Logos 8" and then choosing "Copy Link" (that is if you're using Windows and any sensible browser; I think most of them have that feature. Otherwise, instead of right-clicking, single click on that phrase and then copy the URL from the address bar of your browser.

step 6. Start Logos and sign-in

        • initial sign-in will have to be performed online.
        • then select Work Offline.

You have to sign-in ONCE online to create the file verifying your ownership of a Faithlife account. Thereafter, you can select work offline.

But the point I tried to make above is you have to close Logos and then re-open it to be able to select Work Offline, since you only have that option upon startup. That was not made clear in Step 6.

I left that implied rather than explicit because of recent outages of 30+ hours (twice) and 9+ hours (twice), I found that Verbum adjusted more to the presence/absence of the internet without action on my part. I thought this reflected Joe McCune's post, although I may be incorrect. I do not know the rules regarding when it puts itself in offline mode vs. when I must explicitly tell it to run in offline mode.

I think Alabama was suggesting a new fix-it thread;  there's seems more involved than working offline (the process).

I generally work offline during the day, but go back and forth, depending. I've never used the control-key.  I just turn the wifi on and off and on and so on; the app sees which, and behaves appropriately.  That's on the Mac.  But even on the PC, going back to L4, it was the same way.  I don't think I've ever 'chosen' offline from the start process.

But that said, on the Mac version it was hit or miss, moving from offline (wifi off), to online (wifi on).  I think up to 10.0 (pre-22?), to get back online, a restart was needed.  Now, it works without a restart (wifi on, following a wifi off).  Judging that it got fixed, I guess they knew about it.

hi Rosie, many thanks for your reply and to all of the others that replied.

the answer to my question lies in the following reply:-

"But the point I tried to make above is you have to close Logos and then re-open it to be able to select Work Offline, since you only have that option upon startup. That was not made clear in Step 6."

so it seems that little insight was missing in the wiki post.

to fill in details of what im doing is that i currently have logos 8 installed. i purchased logos 9 when released last year but dont have room on my C drive to install it. now i purchased new E drive with 1tb and wish to install logos 9 there. next is that im using wireless internet with 20gb max per month so if i were to install and download resources again it would take 3 months but i would not be able to do anything else like check emails or anything. then i found the wiki instructions which advised me that i could use my existing resources in the new install without re-downloading them.

so ive completed the logos 9 install but now im trying to get it to recognize my existing resources, but either im missing a step or the scan E:\logos command is not working. it keeps saying it cant find any items or something like that, then asking if i want to search all.

after logos 9 finds all my resources, then i can update the logos 9 install to the recently purchased logos 10. are there any tips on issues to watch out for while im doing this would be appreciated. if there is, then it may be better if i start a new thread based on the suggested issues which we could discuss further. thankyou, regards, michael.

You do not need to install Logos 9. You should skip and go straight to Logos 10.

Moving forward, Logos is going to eliminate the distinction between the software and the Libraries. The next version of the SOFTWARE will be "Logos 22" and will be shipped very soon.

If you have any additional questions, please do create that new thread.

Have they already made Logos 10 (just the software/core engine) available for free? I thought there was still a lag-time between when a new version of the software was released and when it's available for people who just want to upgrade to it without buying a new library. Will that lag-time be eliminated with Logos 22?

Yes, I think they said 23 would upgrade everyone to a single version for support.

It was, and I have amended the wiki to reflect the above description.

You can indeed use the resources from your existing Logos 8 installation, but that is on the C: drive. In Logos 9 type the command:

          scan C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Logos\Data\randomId\ResourceManager\Resources

where username  is your Windows username and randomId is the username for your Logos 8 installation.

Logos will copy the resources from the C: drive to Logos 9 on the E: drive, and then Index them.

sorry dave i sent you a really detailed reply but was sucked into cyber space and lost the lot.

so the short of it is scan c: wont work as c is on laptop so ive done your step 5 on my desktop

so it is scan E:?*?/* where i put it from laptop. but still not finding it. still asks if it should search all.

am i in the search box and not command box? is that the problem, where is command box anyhow if its not at teh top?

greetings and thankyou everyone for your help. i have great success today and it went better than expected.

after Dave confirmed the extra step involved in step 6, my install then wanted to index which enabled it to find all of the logos 8 resources. i did not need to use the command scan for resources.

then after the index i restarted and logged in and then it said i had updates to download. after downloading them it said to restart to apply the updates, then it indexed.

after doing this it was great joy to see that my logos 9 install had gone to logos 10.1 R3, without even needing to download and install it. everything is installed on my E drive leaving 44gb free on my C drive.

thankyou again, im all up to date now. regards, michael.
