Searching Within a Defined Range

Is it possible to search non-Bible resources within a specified range? For instance, I may want to search for something within a specific chapter of a book. Or in a book that contains multiple volumes/treatises I may want to search within one of those individual volumes.

I'm aware of the ability to define a range in the Concordance, but it doesn't work on all my resources and it doesn't really let me search within that range (to my knowledge). It only returns the number of words, references, or works cited within that range. I want to do a traditional search in a predefined range.

    You can't search within a specific chapter or volume/page number, but you can search within a Headword (in a dictionary or encyclopedia) or a Milestone e.g. a passage in a bible commentary, a particular letter of an Church Father, etc.

    But you could highlight all the text and search within that e.g. angel WITHIN {Highlight Gray Highlighter}. The results will stand out if you used a style for a light grey background.

    How do you search within a headword or milestone?

    How do you search within a headword or milestone?

    https://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELP  - look for the link under Advanced Searching.

    Then you use something like  word WITHIN  {Headword head to find word in the text of the article with Headword head.

  • This way of searching is new for me, and I can see the potential behind it. Let's say that I wanted to search within all Tertullian's writings. A quick search in my library reveals that he has treatises within "Ante-Nicene Fathers 3&4." ANF3 is only Tertullian. ANF4 is Tertullian along with three other writers that I don't want to search. Can I use the headword or milestone search (or another search) to search by author? Can I only search within Tertullian's writings?

    Right click on a word and select the Reference that gives you a Search on the other side.

    Click Basic and you will have a search term like <Tertullian = Tertullian, On the Pallium 1>. This is a datatype, so we have to use a Milestone search like {Milestone <Tertullian = Tertullian, On the Pallium>} to locate all 6 articles on the Pallium (1 thru 6). If you want to locate a word/phrase in any of those articles, use word WITHIN {Milestone <Tertullian = Tertullian, On the Pallium>}.

    So you can search by author & article(s), but not author alone. If you look at the Table of Contents for their order, you can search a range of articles e.g.

    {Milestone <Tertullian = Tertullian, On the Pallium - On Flight in Persecution>}

  • Thanks Dave, that's helpful. I was hoping there was a way to search by author alone. The advantage would have been that I wouldn't need to know every single treatise written by that author, the software would know for me. Since we can't search by author alone, that means I need to know which treatises in my library are written by that particular author ahead of time (which I may not know).

    The sidebar Table of Contents will assist in this, but page numbers will also work  e.g. create,creation WITHIN {Milestone <Page 5-165>} for Tertullian in ANF4

  • page numbers will also work

    So then going back to my original question, I can search within a predefined range or a specific chapter of a book as long as I have the page numbers. That's excellent! I've attached a screenshot testing this out in one of my books.

  • So here's the next question. Could it be possible to somehow integrate these search results into a collection? For example, I have in my library an author collection by Paul Tripp. But there are resources where he has authored an article but isn't listed as the author of the entire resource. Could I add that article to my collection? As an example, Tripp wrote an article in January 2010 Tabletalk magazine. I can search that article with this criteria...

    Anxiety WITHIN {Milestone <Page 10-19>}

    But it would be even better if I could add that specific search criteria to my Paul Tripp collection. That way when I search for things that he's authored, that article would be searched too.

    If your rule is Author:(Tripp, Paul), the collection should include all books where Tripp is listed as an Author. If not, then you have to drag that book/magazine into the collection.

    Anxiety WITHIN {Milestone <Page 10-19>}

    But it would be even better if I could add that specific search criteria to my Paul Tripp collection. That way when I search for things that he's authored, that article would be searched too.

    {Milestone <Page 10-19>} defines the article in a specific book/magazine, but it is not possible to restrict a collection to a specific article.
