Can I legally print out a couple pages of one of my Logos books to loan to a friend for educational

Hi everyone!

I appreciate the function Logos gives us to print parts of our resources. I wish we had the ability to loan resources digitally, but since we don’t, I have a friend who is in an M. A. program and needs a book that I own in Logos to reference a few pages. Am I within The bounds of copyright laws to print him a few pages he needs to reference? I know I Was always told I could copy resources from our library at Bible college since it was only for education. Do similar exceptions apply here? Thanks for your help!

I am less concerned with 'legally' and more conscious of 'morally'.

And for the reasons you explain I think that providing a couple of pages would be 'morally' acceptable.

Legally you may be caught by this world's jurisdictions, morally you will be caught in the next worlds judgement.

Thanks for your reply, Mike! I am still interested in the legal component because I believe that needs to be a part of my moral decision making as much as possible.

I Was always told I could copy resources from our library at Bible college since it was only for education.

Schools and Churches are the biggest violators of the Copyright laws under its for education or religious use.

Then on the other side the publishers, who own the copyrights and limit what we can do, charge us the same price per copy as they charge a library with thousands of users instead of the per user price.

Question: what is your friend going to do with the pages you send him? Just read them once and only quote one six line paragraph?

Or maybe if you mark the pages "Burn after reading" so we do not void a sale. [:P] [some of the fair use arguments that I have seen ask if the use voided a sale. (if you did not provide the pages would the person have bought the book?)

This is one huge disadvantage with Logos. When I only had paper books I could easily loan out a copy but since I have gone almost exclusively to Logos it makes loaning impossible.

I'm still dreaming that one day we may be able to temporarily loan our books to others within the Logos ecosystem.

Certainly the technology exists as libraries can loan books temporarily.

@David Ames: I was with the friend yesterday. It turns out he needs to use the book to read for a 4-week class he is taking, and it would involve around 30 pages per week. We both agreed that didn't constitute fair use!

@ Bruce Dunning: I agree! Here's to dreaming. I have bought into the Logos ecosystem, and I love almost everything about it. So far, I only miss two things. (1) The ease of loaning a paper book. (2) The feel of paper! lol However, I love having my entire library with me anywhere I go.

Or just gift without the Logos-tax. Though I suppose Christians might go crazy sharing. Ok, bad idea.

Agreed! Something that has been discussed and is perhaps "in the works" is a type of "family sharing" designed for homeschool families, so I think something like this is a future possibility.[fingers crossed!]
