FL ios Apps Should Give Up Auto-Define?

I'm on latest ios 13 and latest FL app (Logos).

If I highlight a single word, my reading stops and waits, and waits. It's trying to do the auto-define. Eventually, it succeeds. But I have to be careful not to highlight a single word. Painful, like searching offline.

I made sure my system dictionaries are down to 1 ... New Oxford American. And I notice the issue is even for last years Noet. So, it's likely ios. Kindle has its own embedded lookup (quite snappy).

Other apps avoid the problem by not forcing an auto-lookup (eg Accordance, OliveTree, Laridian, PDF readers and so on). Is auto-lookup that needed? Vs a menu choice?

Yes, this is a serious annoyance. I put down my finger to highlight, and get almost instantly both the menu and autolookup. I’m on a 10.5 The iPad Pro.

Did you try it, before asking? Mini4.

But even Noet on an old Mini1 is 3 times as fast, and that's with the battery throttled.

And the old FL apps didn't have the auto-define ... worked fine.

Correction: it was on my new iPad (regular model just released). Now trying it on my iPhone it is much slower. When I turn off internet it is instantaneous

Sounds like my Mini1 is the way to go! No need for that fancy XPhone or latest iPad!

    Thanks, you guys.

    When you say

If I highlight a single word
do you mean you have created a highlight on a single word, or that you have selected a single word (with two selection handles on either side)?

It’s expected that it would run an auto-lookup if a single word is selected with the selection handles, but if it was trying to do a lookup while/as you highlighted a single word than that would be a bug we’d want to fix.

I'm using 'Swipe to Highlight'. When highlighting even for a phrase, a micro-second after pressing the first word, before moving, the selection handles appear. If I release my finger, the selection handles remain and auto-lookup begins. I'd assume that is as designed.

The problem is the auto-lookup is so sloooooow. The work around is to move the finger to a second word, then back, to avoid the lookup.

Or just use an older version of the FL app (Noet) or any of the other Bible apps.

Yeah, definitely annoying. Especially when not on wifi. I'm not sure about everyone else, but for some reason the Android app is much faster and less buggy then the ios app. I seem to only run into issues on ios.

    Ok, I see the issue?

I have 8 panels open ... various reading, etymo-dictionary, linguistics encyclopedia, Bible, etc

If I highlight a word (eg 'case') that can be located in one of my open dictionaries, the result is instantaneous (in this case, displaying a linguistics discussion). Every time.

If I highlight a word that's not located in one of the open dictionaries, it takes forever, before displaying the system dictionary result.

And if it's not in the system dictionary (Oxford American), it produces a false error message (no dictionaries downloaded).

    Now ....

If instead I CLOSE all the panels except one, and then highlight a single word, it instantaneously finds the definition in the system dictionary. Like Alabama first experienced.

    So ...

The app must being tremendously burning cycles looking through open panels for a possible entry. I don't know if it's also burning through non-opened downloaded resources.

    Which ....

Stops everything. Wait, wait, wait, wait. The design looks poor?

    EDIT:

Ok, it's pretty strange. If you start out with a single panel, and highlight a single word, wait, wait, wait. So, there must be some buffering involved, with already scanned resources.

And, it is scanning un-opened downloaded resources. It can find the linguistics encyclopedia even if unopened. Pity someone with a stack of dictionaries diwnloaded.

To summarize: Sometimes it is fast, sometimes it is slow. Overall, improvement is needed.
