Text Comparison tool

I often use the text comparison tool to keep an eye on multiple versions. I realise it is a tool and not a resource as such, but it is supposed to work as a Link set. It's unreliable! It doesn't follow properly and it's always tricky to get it to display the verse i want. And it doesn't accept the usual abbreviations in the passage window. All in all it doesn't behave as I hope. Is it me?

Do you mean it doesn't follow properly when scrolling or that it doesn't follow when you explicitly enter a reference?

I see the problem in scrolling but not when entering a reference.

And it doesn't accept the usual abbreviations in the passage window

Please provide some examples - this seems to be working

Normally when we are in a chapter, and want a fresh verse, just typing the verse number suffices. I'm in Judges 4. i now want verse 19. But typing 19 in the text comparison window doesn't give me Judges 4.19 it gives me Psalm 19! Sometimes it wanders to some ancient Latin document which isn't even the Bible. The passage window in the text comparison tool is very fickle.

I see what you mean - thanks.

This does seem rather strange - hopefully someone from Faithlife will comment on this one

    Rosemary,

I have reported problems with the Text Comparison tool and linking a number of times over the past few years. I was told it is on a list of bugs, but it must be one that is difficult to fix, or only impacts a few users since it is still unresolved. I have removed it from my workspaces and put a link to it on the shortcut bar.

If I am studying a verse that is active in my bible and then use the shortcut bar to open the text comparison tool, it defaults to the verse i am studying. A work around for the bugs still in it.

I too hope someone from FL will once again recognize these problems and maybe move them up the bug list.

Agree. It's been hopelessly broke for several years now, since they did their scrolling-verses update. I was tangling around with it last week trying to change Bible groups. Took about 10 minutes to fool it. And entering verses, and sync'ing are buggy, and the popups repeat the display ... so useful.

I can't imagine they can't fix a text comparison. Those go back to the old Apple II days, if I remember.

This should be improved in 8.12. There are some remaining issues we have open cases for.

    Thanks Philana,

I am glad this is being worked on. I realize you indicated there are still issues, so I want to point out the main one for me to make sure it is also addressed.

Set ESV and Text Comparison tool to link. You can use top bible in vertical columns. Now just click on the verse button on the ESV. The TC does not take the verse to the top of the pane and eventually becomes completely our of sync.

    Thanks!!

    John,

I'm having trouble reproducing what you are describing. Can you post a screenshot or a screen recording showing the issue?

By verse button, do you mean the blue verse link in the Text Comparison Tool?

No the arrow on the ESV where you can move to the next verse/article etc. If you cannot find it reply back and I will send something when I am at my computer.
