My yearly ASK - iWork Pages FOOTNOTES
I have been pleading for over 3 years for Logos to find out what it will take to get FOOTNOTES to work inside PAGES. When I copy and paste from LOGOS to PAGES, the pasted info includes the citation, but will not automatically put that into a footnote, as it would in WORD. I DON'T use WORD and don't desire to. For years I have been asking for this, to no avail. I am SUPER GRATEFUL for Logos and simply want to save time for me and others. PLEASE, let's get a fix for this. Thanks much...and Merry Christmas!

Hi Jackie,
I am not sure exactly what the situation is or what options you have tried with the above mentioned problem, but it seems you prefer to use Pages for working on documents. If I am correct, Pages can open Docx files with little issues. Perhaps a workaround could be possible (at least until a better option is available). But first, what is your main issue with Word: cost? ease of use? etc?
If your problem is cost, have you considered trying something like OfficeLibre? It is free for Mac and it can save Docx files. Perhaps you can use it as a go between only. Copy the stuff from Logos to OfficeLibre (although I must confess I am a Word user and have not copied text from Logos to OfficeLibre, so I am not sure if the footnotes will be posted to OfficeLibre). If it does copy the footnotes, save the OfficeLibre document as Docx and open that document in Pages. Perhaps this will preserve the footnotes and you can continue working on your document within Pages.
I know it is not elegant, but perhaps it might be a workable option for no financial impact for now. Ok, you will need to install OffceLibre on your Mac, but it will only function as a go-between between Logos and Pages.
If you have tried this, or something similar, please just ignore my post. I hope Logos manage to fix this for you soon. [:D]0 -
Thanks for your input. Yes, I have used Word and Office (open source) to do this in the past for seminary papers and the like. Pages is much more useful to me as a Mac user for a lot of reasons I won't get into. I have been asking for this fix for years and I'm not sure it has been taken seriously. I'm certain I'm not the only Mac user with Pages as a primary word processor. (I know the much older version of Pages allowed the footnoting from Logos).

This was broken by Apple and unfortunately, they did not release documentation that would allow us to fix that. You can see this post for more information. I've created a case to look into whether or not this information is now available. I don't have any timeline on how soon the team can look at it.

Hello, Philana. When I click on your "post" link for more information, it tries to open in the Logos web app, but nothing happens. Does it work OK for you?
Hi Jackie,. Yesterday I "upgraded" my Mac OS to the latest version and it no longer will support my old 32-bit version of Word. I don't need to use the MS Office stuff that much so I'm going to see if I can make the transition to the iWork tools instead. I was fooling around with Pages today and I can see that if one is doing a paper or something with lots of citations, the manual formatting of the citation into a footnote would quickly get to be a pain. So like you, I am hoping that Logos can get a fix in place so we can save time in Pages.

I'm glad you continue to ask. I'm an Apple user who has continued to use Word precisely for this reason. Every year or so I think about switching over to Pages to write sermons or papers and then hit the "oh yeah, the footnote thing" wall. Hopefully, it will get fixed someday but alas, there are more pressing things for me to attend to.

Not only Logos but other software acts in the same way. What would go in a footnote appears after the block of copied text, so I go to the Insert menu and add Footnote at the end of the block of copied text. I then move what would be in the footnote to the footnote space at the bottom of the page by highlighting the source information, then pressing CMD-X, then placing the cursor in the footnote block at the bottom of the page, followed by CMD-V to paste the source information into the footnote space. This is a bit awkward, but gets the job done.

Faithlife do similar things on the software side of things, this is not unique to Apple. I also have similar issues with Microsoft Office 365 software. The sim of companies today is to get you signed up to their subscription programs. Producing qaulity software is secondary.
