Install of Logos Bible Study Tools: commentary, reading plan erased highlights (BUG)

Hi,

I just recently purchased a chromebook and was going to try demo'ing the Logos Bible Study Tools app from the Google play store.

The app didn't really fit my needs so I uninstalled it and was planning on using just the web based app.

I do a lot of highlighting in my books, and after logging back into the "web" app all of my highlights are missing.

Instead, my highlights were converted into notes which is not what I want. I have specific notes that I take on things that I find interesting, and highlight things that I want to quickly identify if I'm re-reading a book.

Can this please be fixed? I started deleting my additional notes that were converted from my highlighted text.

Something strange happened after installing the logos app from the play store. My notes and highlights are very important to me. If I could get back to where I was before installing the app, this would be great.

Highlights and notes both belong to the ‘class’ annotation. Each just has different attributes activated that change how they appear in a resource but under the hood they are essentially the same thing and are stored in the same database as a result. If you want to separate them you have to assign each to a different ’note file’.

To understand better your issue can you advise how you were accessinh Logos before you installed the app from the google store. If it was on a PC or Mac what version of a Logos were you using?

    Welcome to the forums.

I started deleting my additional notes that were converted from my highlighted text.

You likely removed your highlights, if I correctly understand what you mean. Does this view of notes show no highlights?

If so, then you likely need to enlist the aid of customer service to figure out what has gone awry. However, if there is a count under highlights then you likely misinterpreted the highlight as it appears in notes.

The typical highlight appears in the file with the text to which the highlight applies and the highlight itself (red question mark).

If you remove these records you are removing your highlighting.Using Chrome I see the highlight on my Bible.

If you have removed highlights, click on "trash" in the lower left of the Notes panel. This should give you the opportunity to recover them.

    Welcome to the forums, Brian.

In case anything in previous answers was unclear:

In Logos 8, highlights are notes. If you want your highlights saved in one spot and your notes in another, you will have to save your highlights to one notebook and your written notes to a different notebook.

    Hi,

Perhaps I'm still confused here. I have an option to "highlight text" or "add note" when I right click some text.

I'm removing the highlight "anchors" because this creates to much clutter imo.

This allowed for the highlights to persist while keeping my manually typed notes separate.

I  currently have 189 highlights and 31 notes which are separate. This part works for me. The problem I had was my highlights became notes. So 189 + 31 which is not what I wanted.

I ensured I clicked on the "Notebook" view so I could select the specific notebook I was working on. I refreshed the page, and ran through trying to ensure my display filter was proper, which it was. During the time of reporting this problem, the Notebook's note pages had the 8 pages of notes + the every bit of highlight I made for the book I was reading.

I checked my view multiple times because I've been utilizing the notes + highlighting pretty extensively. I want to lean towards it "Not" being user error, but I can't prove this.

Perhaps there was something odd with the internet at the time of trying to work on this, but after multiple page refreshes I decided to take the initiative which led me to deleting what I thought were highlights converted to notes.

I also cannot find an option to restore deleted notes. I'm hoping that by restoring the deleted 'highlight notes" that my highlights can be restored. And I can at least get to where I started.

Yes. Logos 8 treats the text you highlight as a note. This is not intuitive for a number of users!

I  currently have 189 highlights and 31 notes which are separate. This part works for me. The problem I had was my highlights became notes. So 189 + 31 which is not what I wanted.

Your highlights still are notes, and they always were notes. All highlights in Logos 8 are always notes.

I also cannot find an option to restore deleted notes. I'm hoping that by restoring the deleted 'highlight notes" that my highlights can be restored. And I can at least get to where I started.

I vaguely recall previous discussions on the forums about problems with people restoring deleted notes, but I cannot remember how they concluded. Hopefully someone else will chime in soon on this point.

Thank so much! This is a really helpful community of users! And thanks for the feedback as well! This helps me to better troubleshoot my issues as I learn how things are supposed to work.

I'll wait to hear back in case there is a good way to work out the deleted notes issue.

To restore deleted notes, there should be an option at the bottom of the trash display - are you not seeing this?

What you needed to do initially was simply select "notes" in my first screen shot. That would have hidden the "highlights" and made things appear as you expected. Unfortunately, this is something that needs to be learned rather than being immediately obvious. Perhaps a suggestion that the default be notes only rather than both notes and highlights is needed.

Trash is at the lower left of the notes panel. Are you sure that the bottom of your panel is visible?

When I select "Trashed Notebooks" I have an Undelete option. When I select "Trashed Notes" I don't have this option. I zoomed out to ~30% of a full screen view. This option is not available for "Trashed Notes" But is for "trashed Notebooks".

    1. Open the Notes Tool via the Tool Menu. Note that the tab will say Notes and have an icon unique to Notes.

    2. Click on the Trash icon IN the Notes Tool.

    3. Now select "trashed notes" - the top item on the left-hand side menu.

It looks to me from your screen shots that you are not getting into the Notes Tool.

MJ - I believe you are working in the Notes tool on the desktop whereas I believe Brian is using the web app.

I'm using the web app on Google Chrome.  But I was getting confused over the apparent discrepancy re: "web app" - is it a question of PC vs. Mac or of the selected browser?

It's the webapp on Google Chrome on a Chromebook. So using ChromOS which is a Linux variant. (But native Chrome Browser)

But...since it's in the chrome browser I'm thinking something else.

I'll see if I can reproduce this, but here's a theory.

Could it be that when the # of notes with no paging is causing the bar with the delete button to not display?

-It does load when I select my deleted notebooks with only two values

-It fails to load the 'highlight' notes with 83 values.

If I have time today, I'll see if I can reproduce this.

This is what I"m thinking of testing:
1.) Create highlight from notebook - Verify delete option
2.) Create many new highlights - Perhaps 40 or more
3.) Verify if delete option exists, if so, continue adding highlights (Give up eventually if can't reproduce)

Could it be the lack of paging causing the delete options not to be visible?

I ran through the steps provided, so I believe I'm following the steps as expected. I'll see if I can find a screen record tool to record this step by step to verify the behavior.

To me it looks like MJ is in "Notes" and Brian is in a Notebook called "Can I Trust the Bible?"

I found out what the issue is. It's not necessarily a bug, but a feature that supports paging would of helped in my case.

I had to zoom out quite a bit to see the delete/un-delete option.

Here is the sample pic of what I did.

Thanks everyone for your time in helping me understand what I did wrong. I should be set with getting this sorted. We can close out this thread if needed.
