Any iPad user can attest that highlighting the period at the end of a sentence is a minigame of precision... compared to say the kindle app that detects the period and makes highlighting easier.. could this be made easier for logos?
For clarification: are you wanting to highlight the period by itself, or as a part of the previous word?
whole sentence PLUS period.
I'd want smart selection to understand that if I'm only highlighting a part of the sentence, to not include the period.
Well, I think that is the solution in any case. I hate “smart selection,” but it sounds like that is what he’d want.
have you tried turning it on?
I do relate to the OP’s point. But I find ‘smart selection’ an oxymoron, period.

John - Did “smart selection“ provide any help?
I can confirm that I've noticed the same thing - a propensity to select the word after the period. I often select the whole sentence and then just as I release the mouse/pen, it jumps to include the next word, and I have to start all over again. I have switched to character selection because I can't get "smart" selection to ever select characters, which is sometimes necessary when selecting the triconsonantal root of a Hebrew word. I would have thought "smart" selection would prioritize sentence divisions, then word divisions, but would still allow selecting individual characters.
I can also confirm. Trying to highlight a chunk of text to include its period in the iOS mobile app can drive anyone mad. I’ve given up at this point
Hmm. I didn't have any troubles [to get an entire sentence selected with punctuation] when I was goofing off with it yesterday, but then again, I don't like "smart selection" so I don't use it regularly.
It occurred to me that my comments were regarding the Desktop app, not the mobile version. I don't really notice any tendency to change the final selection in Android.
