Looking for Collection feedback

The following is my first attempt at making collections; I tried to make a collection of commentaries for each book of the Bible. It works somewhat OK, most of the commentaries are commentaries that have the name of the Bible book in the title or subject.

There are still many commentaries that are not included because they are labeled Old Testament or New Testament or tagged differently than the search criteria (name not in title or subject). Also if the name has a number in it like 1 Samuel, the search is much more complicated because the naming scheme is not consistent.

I would like to think there is a better way (8 hours of hard labor Wink ) and I am just not familiar enough with Logos4 and need to learn a better way. If anyone knows how to make this better, please feel free to make suggestions, all suggestions and corrections are welcome.

What is your goal or purpose in making these collections? I ask because I find that the Passage Guide or Explorer work great for identifying all the commentaries relevant to a given book or passage, and they don't require collections to do it.

(Otherwise I think your collection definitions look fine.)

As Todd said, depending on your goal, a better solution may be to place your commentaries in collections based on type. I got the idea from another user on the forum (it may have been Mark Barnes; If it's not Mark sorry, no disrespect to the person who came up with the idea) to create a commentary collection for Academic Commentaries, Intermediate Commentaries, Expository Commentaries, Single Volume Commentaries and Unclassified Commentaries. The strings for these are posted on the wiki.

The idea of multiple commentary collections based on type sounds interesting, I am probably going to tag every resource available with multiple tags in order to do more focused searches. I only want the information I want when I want it and not every possible type of information available, it is only a distraction.

Two things I noticed: one, the way you set up the search criteria is different for different books for the same type of information; second, with many collections, the pull down menus get very cluttered.

How I use the Passage Guide is to turn most of the options off, leaving only the Commentaries section, a collection of my background material, a collection for my journal articles, and a cross reference section. This gives me plenty of material that if focused on only the section that I am actually studying.

As others have mentioned, you can create a customized Passage Guide to only have what you want. Here is my "Commentaries" PG that has multiple commentary sections and nothing else. Each section is limited to a specific collection of commentaries (that I have created). I find it extraordinarily useful:

On the other hand...the "Explorer" window is fast enough to link to your main bible window, especially if you collapse the sections you don't want. It will remember those collapsed sections so you don't have to close them every time. As long as you've prioritized your commentaries, you will get a good selection without clicking "more":

Ken, you can also make your own passage guide--custom build what you want in it.

If your bible book title collections work for you, go for it. I personally would just take a scaled down Passage guide before going through all those collections, since it seems everyone of them will show up in a passage guide.

Where commentary collections could be helpful is searching the whole series (Gen-Rev, for example) for comments on "John 1:1" or something. Or putting collections of authors, to find out what DA Carson has to say about John 1:1 etc., even if those comments are in a commentary of his on Matthew.

I hear you Ken. It is great to have all of this information at our disposal but it can be overwhelming. What I have found is investing the time in creating collectio0ns based on your study methods and processes and then customizing the PG so that it focuses on those collections seems to work best for me. I have also been helped a lot by some of the user videos demonstrating ways to use and manipulate the resources and information we have. If you have not already watched them, Mark Branes did a great series on sermon prep in L4. He demonstrated some very useful techniques for using L4 efficiently. Taking advantage of the custom layout features and saving layouts for various steps in my study process has been very beneficial as well.

Have you considered using "My Tags" as a distinction.
Open your library and search on say "Galatians." When all the books come up, select the ones you would like to include in a Galatians Collection by clicking on each book while holding the CTRL key down. Group tag them as "Galatians" then go to your collections and create a new one with "mytag:galatians" Anytime you add a new commentary though you will have to give it a my tag for it to be added to your collection.
