Dead Sea Scrolls

Hello all,

I am working with the Dead Sea Scrolls: study edition and the Qumran Sectarian Manuscript. I am trying to use them for a NT comparative project in Seminary and I am not sure if I am using them correctly. I can't help feel like I don't know how to effectively search them for what I need (i.e., Righteousness, Works of the Law, Grace, Covenant etc.,)

Any advice about how to use both the biblical and non-biblical Dead Sea Scroll packages in Logos would be most helpful.

Well, thinking this over, I assume you know hebrew? You'd need to search on lemmas that match your english sense. To do it decently defensible, you'd want to start in the greek NT, where it's referencing the OT. Then, see what hebrew sits underneath the LXX greek.

But (my own opinion), you're on a 'fools errand'. Logos offers quite a few resources trying to match up the DSS to NT concepts, and it's highly 'discussable'. Covenant is a good example. Far easier with the Talmud.

Denise, thank you for your comment. Glad I found this forum. I've taken Greek and finishing my second semester in Hebrew.

I have a passage in mind, Rom 9:33-35, and I want to see if there are any parallels there in the Dead Sea Scrolls concerning comparing faith and works. You know, something to that effect.

Also, what do you mean by a "fools errand," like there are resources that do this already? Do you have any in mind?

The Lexham Press DSS have sense tagging, so you ought to be able to search with that, but it does not seem to be working. I will post a bug report.

My use (smiling) is a task that could not be completed. Only a fool (not you) would try.

Your example is a perfect example ... we know what the later church meant by 'faith', and I'm sure, with your greek, the underlying greek is quite arguable (multiple senses, multiple texts). Then, 'works' quickly gets in trouble ... what jewish word as an equivalent? And for which group of jews?

That's before you try to launch into a series of writings (Qumran) whose sense is eternally arguable ... who, when, where? (I've never truck'd with Logos' senses).

But your idea is a great place to start. You'll find faith, but it won't mean what you want it to. Whether works really associates with Qumran, or more a membership ticket? Second Temple had theology that righteousness/works were tradable (pay) in the next life.

Yeah, that is really what I'm after, to find in the sectarian (or biblical) scrolls a place where I can see in context how "works" may have functioned and the imbedded theology, specially its relationship to faith. I have been doing the word searches, but was unsure if anyone in this forum had done comparative work like that and would have any advise on a method to go about it.

I do have Ancient Literature guide, but as well only get a small number of hits. I imagine there is more that may be relevant that is not being flagged? If so, how could I search all of my Dead Sea collection apart from the Ancient Literature guide?
