Logos resources overwhelming my hard drive - what to move to a secondary drive

I'm working with the limitations of a MacBook Pro with 250 GB hard drive that is not upgradable unless I tether a SSD to my laptop, which I have done. I now have 750 GB of storage.

Anyone else with this problem? Looking for advice. Do I transfer my 140 GB Logos files to the secondary drive or should I move other less often used programs there? It appears my computer will have this tether for the remainder of its life which will be quite a while...

I honestly don't know if it's possible...when I lived in the PC world, I could...however, in the locked down Apple OS, I question it is possible or even easily doable. Really looking for advice as a novice.

Hi Shawn, welcome to the forums.

You have a few options here. One would be to move the Logos resources folder to your larger SSD. The instructions for doing that are here: https://wiki.logos.com/Install_in_different_folder_or_drive

You could also move media (like videos and the photos library) to the second SSD. This would be preferable, I think.

But before you do anything, you should check to see if you can trim the Logos files down. 140 GB is quite large. Find the Webcache folder and see how big it is. I suspect it's the problem, if you watch a lot of videos in Logos. The Webcache folder can be completely emptied from time to time without any detriment (besides having to redownload a video to rewatch it).

Thanks. My webcache has only one 25 KB file in it. I do have a library of 19,464 resources in my Logos library. Is there any other caches to check or delete. Also, my photos library is only 3.64 GB so it's not really taking up much space.

Okay, that's quite a load of resources!

Here's another option: In Logos 8, you can move resources off from your hard drive and keep them only in the cloud. You can still search them and download them selectively when you need them. To move a resource off from your drive, open the Library window, select the resource(s), and click the "Downloaded" icon in the inspector panel on the right. You'll get a "remove from device" option.

NOTE: this is not the same as hiding a resource.

Where did the 140 GB figure come from?

Moving the Logos4 folder to the external SSD is a doable option. Just be aware that you might have trouble getting help from Tech Support because it's an unsupported option. That's why I would try to keep it on the System Drive. But others have had their resources on an external drive for years without any trouble. I did also at one time.

I got it from the "Other" in the Manage Storage of my hard drive...now it has dropped to 128.48 GB. I was assuming it was mostly from my Logos files.

That's because the OS is figuring out what the "Other" actually is. My Logos files are reported in the Documents category. If you click on the "Manage..." button, you'll get a more advanced view. It could help you track down large files that are wasting space.

Apple's macOS has a number of movable items (Mail and Photo Library readily comes to mind). One benefit of Apple's "locked down" approach is less vulnerability for malware. Also Apple includes more capability in macOS and applications than Windows: e.g. Preview can annotate PDF's and images (so Preview name is a bit misleading). Another macOS freebie is many high quality audio voices (cost extra for Windows).

macOS 10.14 Mojave (Macintosh HD - shrunk in size & renamed)
macOS 10.15 Catalina

The macStuff partition is owned by an administrative account, which prevents non-administrative account from accidentally renaming partition (would cause symbolic link to no longer work). The macStuff has Logos4 folder (133.71 GB) that is linked for macOS 10.14 and macOS 10.15 so the Logos installation can be used by either boot partition.

Thankful for Logos 8 Cloud option. Older 2013 MacBook Air has 250 GB internal SSD so lacks space for complete library to be downloaded so Cloud storage for most resources is being used. Thanks for Tip about "remove from device" that may have helped several months ago; did a complete uninstall followed by fresh install on MBA, which generated a new installation ID (different from iMac) so MBA has many resources in the Cloud while iMac has entire library downloaded. The iMac and MBA had the same installation ID from using Logos wiki steps => Quick Installation onto Multiple Macs Now on MBA can filter Library by "not on this device" followed by sorting by Reading => download resources with Reading progress.
