Null highlight/note data
I accidentally discovered that if I highlight text, then un-highlight it, a record remains in the table that has neither a note nor a highlight flag.
How to reproduce this:
1. Click and drag in a Bible verse to select some text.
2. You will see the highlight dialog popup.
3. Select a highlight color.
4. Click somewhere else to see the colored highlight.
5. Now click and drag the same text that is highlighteded.
6. You will see the highlight dialog again.
7. This time click the undo icon (circle with backslash through it.) to make the highlight disappear.
8: In the main menu, choose Tools | Notes to open a Notes panel.
9. In that panel, if you don't see the filter icon (triangle with a dot under it), click the hamburger icon until it appears.
10. Set the filter to Type | Highlights and choose "by date modified" to put your latest addition at the top.
11. At the top of this record, you will see the record that has a null (circle with backslash) for both Note and Highlight. It's taking up wasted space.
12. Delete the record by choosing the menu (three vertical bullets) and choosing "Delete this record."
By now I might have a thousand of these bogus records to delete.
Q: Is there a way to filter them out of the rest to speed the process?

I’ve seen a similar issue when you delete the anchor for a highlight (rather than deleting the note). It leaves a blank note that’s not attached to anything.
I’d hope that a fix would be to automatically delete a note once it no longer had anything attached to it.

This has been how the "Remove highlighting" button (circle with backslash) has functions since... I think the feature was introduced? I agree with you that it makes no sense to merely hide the highlight and not actually delete the note file that it creates.
However, recently (at least I only noticed maybe a couple months ago) they added the option to delete in the right-click context menu when you right-click over a highlighted text. This functions as one would expect the "Remove highlight" feature to function.
Maybe they could rename it to something like "Remove highlight style from note" to more accurately indicate what it does.

I don't think this makes sense from a programming perspective. They would need to know whether the note had any text or highlight style attached to the note before deleting it. And since you already have to have the notes window open in order to delete an anchor, it's simpler for the user to open the kebob or overflow menu to delete the note (just a few more centimeters of moving the mouse) instead of writing a program to check if the text-box and highlight style fields are being used by the customer.

I don't think this makes sense from a programming perspective.
Here’s a simpler option. Disable the delete anchor option if there is only one anchor.
The program shouldn’t let us create null notes in the first place.

Why? a note doesn't require an anchor.

Interesting! I'd expected a selection or reference would be associated with a specific note, but you're right. You can create a note with no anchor.
So, if the text of that unanchored note is deleted (rather than the note itself), that seems to be yet another edge case where an unsuspecting user can leave null notes in the database.
One might say, "Don't do that," but the program lets you do that. Is it the user's fault?
Do the developers consider null notes a bug or is it working as intended?
