Tip 23: Factbook Biblical Person: Lemma: Bible Word Study: Senses
Please be generous with your additional details, corrections, suggestions, and other feedback. This is being built in a .docx file for a PBB which will be shared periodically.

Proper nouns generally do not have multiple meanings except in the sense of multiple people sharing a name. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Senses section of a Bible Word Study on ืึทืึฐืจึธื has no results (1). Therefore, I clicked on the lemma ืึธื (2) to generate a Bible Word Study with results in the Senses section.
From Verbum Help:
[quote]Senses Section
This section shows where the word occurs in the Bible Sense Lexicon. It appears in the Bible Word Study guide.[1]
This is a classic example of a definition that is of little help unless one is familiar with the Bible Sense Lexicon.
From Verbum Help:
[quote]Bible Sense Lexicon
Enter a word in the search box to explore related meanings, as well as biblical words that can be used in that sense.
The Bible Sense Lexicon lets users explore the meaning of words, and how those words are used in original language contexts.
A sense is a basic unit of meaning. A given lemma (dictionary form of a word) will have one or more senses, one for each basic meaning of the word. A given sense may span across several lemmas.
For example, the sense "to shudder" is a sense of the Greek lemmas tremล, phrissล, and seiล. The Bible Sense Lexicon reveals all three of these Greek lemmas, alerting users to the different connotations of the words that can be translated as "to shudder."
Senses in the Bible Sense Lexicon are related to one another in various ways. For example, the type of relationship expresses the fact that an asp is a type of snake which is in turn a type of reptile, a type of small moving thing, a type of swarming thing, a type of animal, a type of living thing. Other relationships are also expressed (see below).
To view data for a word sense:
1.ย ย ย ย ย ย Click Tools > Reference > Bible Sense Lexicon; it will open in a new window.
2.ย ย ย ย ย ย Enter a sense label in the Navigation box and press Enter, or choose from the suggested matches that appear.
3.ย ย ย ย ย ย Click another sense label in the Relationships section to navigate the Bible Sense Lexicon to that sense, or enter another sense label in the navigation box.
The sections of the Bible Sense Lexicon include:
Left panel

โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย The sense label, part of speech, and a definition
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Aย graph showing the frequency of the senseโs usage throughout the Bible, organized by book. The number of occurrences is displayed to the left of the graph.
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย The Lemmas section lists the original language words associated with the displayed sense, ordered from most frequent to least. Clicking a lemma opens a Bible Word Study for that lemma.
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Hovering over a verse reference will display the full verse in a tooltip.
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย The Relationships section categorizes how the current sense relates to other senses. The + icon appears when there are other senses connected to the one displayed. Non-biblical senses are italicized.
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Type of denotes the top-down hierarchical relationship for the current sense, e.g. โpersonโ is a type of โliving thingโ
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Derived/Derived from lists senses that are derived from similar senses, such as one sense causing another. For example, โto destroy (damage)โ is derived from โto be destroyedโ
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Similar to lists adjective senses that are semantically similar. For instance, โdarkโ is similar to โgloomyโ
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Pertains to connects semantically similar senses regardless of part of speech. For example, โsacrificeโ pertains to โsacrificialโ
โขย ย ย ย ย ย ย Antonyms list senses that have the opposite meaning of the current sense. For instance, โheavy (weight)โย is an antonym of โlightโ
1.ย ย ย ย ย ย The See Also section contains links to related Factbook entries, Topic Guides, and Louw-Nida numbers. Clicking the Louw-Nida link will open to that number (or range).

A basic definition from Handbook for Biblical Interpretation:
[quote]POLYSEMY
Multiplicity of meanings. In contemporary literary theory, there is much debate about the inherent nature of literary texts to generate and legitimate multiple meanings or understandings. Multiple readings depend not only on the nature of language (esp. literary uses of language) but also on the social location of the reader. Since different readers bring different repertoires to a text, they produce different understandings.[3]
An example of a polysemic word is play which has senses for (a) a theater production, (b) a football play, or (c) an imaginative action of children. One often speaks of context-sensitive disambiguation as the way one selects the correct sense of a word in a particular. What Faithlife has done with there Bible Sense Lexicon is given Verbum users the opinion of Faithlife of which meaning of a word is intended in the text. In some cases, it is important to question the neutrality and accuracy of the Faithlife choice. The same caution applies to blindly accepting the choice of the translators of the Bible translation you are using.

The Bible Senses section of the lexicon shows the multiple senses that are reflected by a segment in the Senses ring.

The center of the ring (1) contains a lemma and the senses associated to that lemma. Remember these are not translations of the lemma โ they are the senses (meanings) that the lemma can take. Each sense of the lemma gets a segment of the ring representing the percentage of the total occurrences of the lemma reflect this sense (meaning). The segments are separated by color and labeled with the sense.
If one clicks on the lemma in the center of the ring, one opens a detailed list below (2). Each heading line contains:
- An expand/contract detail arrowhead
- A sense icon
- A sense (in word(s))
- The number of times the lemma is used in this sense
- The total number of times the lemma is used i.e. the lemmas total use in all senses
- The number of times this lemma is used in this sense
- The number of times this sense occurs for all lemmas
- The spark chart is built in the standard manner i.e. normalized data across chapters of the Bible.

Clicking on a segment of the ring, causes that segment to be pulled out of the ring to highlight it (1) and for a detail list for that meaning to shown below (2). Data shown include:
- A sense icon
- A sense (in word(s))
- The number of times the lemma is used in this sense
- The total number of times the lemma is used i.e. the lemmas total use in all senses
- The number of times this lemma is used in this sense
- The number of times this sense occurs for all lemmas
- The spark chart is built in the standard manner i.e. normalized data across chapters of the Bible.
- The part of speech of the sense
- The gloss for the sense
- For each of one or more lemmas for the sense
- A lemma icon
- The lemma in the script of the original language
- A speaker icon which, when clicked, provides the pronunciation.
- The transliterated lemma
- Bible reference by verse for each occurrence of the sense with the translation text for the sense highlighted. Note that the single sense (meaning) of the Hebrew lemma does not imply a single word is used as the translated text.
Note that the translation is not a settable feature for this section of the Bible Word Study.

Mouse-over the ring segment (1) brings up a popup (2) card in which the ring show the distribution of the sense across the lemmas used for the sense.

Mouse-over the sense in the detail list sense header displays a Bible sense information card. Clicking on the sense opens the Bible Sense Lexicon to that sense.

A discussion of the contents of the Bible Sense Lexicon tool is deferred to the next tip.

Mouse-over on the lemma in the detail list sense header displays a lemma information card. These summary reference cards will be discussed in detail in a later tip.
For the compulsive only
To count the number of times a lemma has a particular sense, do a morphology search with the search argument of the lemma intersecting the sense. Note the count matches that shown above.

To find the total number of times a sense appears in Scripture, both Greek and Hebrew must be considered. The collection Bible in Original Language contains both a Hebrew Old Testament and a Greek New Testament. The count of 13 in Hebrew and 1 in Greek corresponds to the count in front of the spark line above.
