New LOGOS 8 user & my ideas

I have arrived from WORDsearch, which I use for helping put together Sunday talks and supporting my daily Bible study and in our Bible Discovery Groups. I am an 'officially' retired broadcasting regulation consultant who worked in both popular music and Christian radio in the UK & Zambia, therefore I am not a Bible academic but someone who uses the Bible to help live a positive Christian life.

Having been getting the hang of LOGOS 8 over the last fortnight I have come across some suggestions that I believe would help in making the use of your software more user friendly for non-academics like me.

My first set of suggestions relate to some of the books that I used in WORDseach and how they are shown in LOGOS 8:

1. The Passion Translation (TPT) appears in WORDsearch, Kindle and in printed form as NT with Psalms, Proverbs & Song of Songs. The LOGOS 8 version doesn't and I trust that this will be rectified.

2. NT Wright's New Testament for Everyone appears in WORDsearch as one complete volume which makes clicking from one verse in one Bible book to another verse in another book very easy, as the complete set of books is present. I would suggest that this facility is added to LOGOS 8.

3. J Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible also appears in WORDsearch as one complete volume rather than separate books. Again as with the New Testament for Everyone this facility from WORDsearch needs to be added to LOGOS 8.

4. The Message Bible in WORDsearch shows each verse separately and not in the group of verses as in LOGOS 8 and some of the printed books. This is a VERY useful facility as it enables the user to click from one Bible version to another when looking for the clearest translation/paraphrase of a verse to put into one's Sunday Bible talk. I found when I was putting any Bible quotes into radio programmes that having a clearly understood translation helped the listener understand.

3. J Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible also appears in WORDsearch as one complete volume rather than separate books. Again as with the New Testament for Everyone this facility from WORDsearch needs to be added to LOGOS 8.

Even though it is presented in multiple volumes, you should be able to move from one to the other by entering the appropriate reference in the reference box. This makes use of the Series capability in Logos. I don't have those resources so can't specifically check

4. The Message Bible in WORDsearch shows each verse separately and not in the group of verses as in LOGOS 8 and some of the printed books. I have managed to sort out both the NT Wright New Testament for Everyone and the J Vernon McGee's Thru The Bible by giving them the same A letter in the Series tool and this is working, allowing me to jump from one commentary to another as well as from one Bible translation/paraphrase to another.

With regard to the John Goldingay Old Testament for Everyone, I am wondering if this is available in LOGOS 8 on its own as I already the own NT Wright New Testament part of Bible for Everyone, and being a Yorkshireman I don't wish to pay for that again!

4. I have tried your suggestion for The Message Bible (MSG) with regard to individual verses being numbered and it only appears to swap between no verse numbers or the grouped verses in LOGOS 8. It does not come up with the individual verses indicated as is the case in the WORDsearch version of The Message.

Perhaps this is something that the LOGOS 8 Team need to look into alongside adding the Psalms, Proverbs and Song of Songs to The Passion Translation (TPT) New Testament book as in the WORDsearch, Kindle and printed book versions.

Goldingay's OT is not currently available separately - I haven't seen any indication that this is planned.

But I understand your point!

I'm a bit confused what you are missing here. The one-verse-per-line Visual Filter to me indicates very clearly the individual verses:

I can't see how the non-paragraph layout of WS looks different at all:

(that's WS 11 showing - which I paid for and never actually used, didn't want to repeat that for WS 12)

I have now sorted out the problem with individual verses and I have now got all my Bible translations working with the 'one verse per line' option.

I hadn't realised that one had to go from one Bible version to another to set this up as I didn't have to do that with WORDsearch.

Do they have different content? Because the price differential is wide.

Sure: the one being a bible, including bible text (and intros and such, but mainly bible text), the other being a commentary set that includes the bible text but mainly the commentaries.

I do not have access to European pricing. but the "dynamic pricing" formula sometimes gets a little wonky. Since you already own the NT, then you should not have to purchase them again. The two series should be more closely priced. My access to these two collections (I own the NT as well) are within $3 of each other.

Thanks for that. I find that often The Passion Translation (TPT) along with The Message (MSG) is very helpful in placing Biblical principles in clear language, especially for new Christians.

I am slowly finding out what has been migrated from WORDsearch to LOGOS 8. Until everything I use has moved across I will continue to use WORDsearch along with The Living Commentary software packages.

Anyway, as I've finished my morning Bible readings it's time to turn on my DAB radio or ask Alexa to get me Times Radio to catch-up with the day's news.

I am slowly starting to get the hang of LOGOS 8

I have the Bible translations that I use (around 15) loaded in the left-hand panel and the commentaries/study Bibles loaded in the right-hand panel. This allows me to quickly click from one to another to find the most relevant translation/paraphrase and then see what the various commentaries/study Bibles have to say about the passage.

What I have found is that when my mouse hovers over a Bible quote in a commentary or study Bible the actual verse always comes up in the ESV.

In WORDsearch I was able to change this setting, for the commentaries/study Bibles at the same time, to the Anglicised NIV.

Is this possible in LOGOS 8?

The Bible that shows in the popup is your highest prioritised one. To change this you need to look at prioritising your resources.

One of the things that I found very useful in WORDsearch was the ability when changing Bible verse was/is that I click and all the books in the current Bible show, then you select the chapter and finally the verse you want from a drop-down list.

If you are using The Passion Translation (TPT) then, in WORDsearch, you are shown in the drop-down list Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Songs and the complete New Testament whereas in the Anglicised NIV (ANIV 2011) you are shown all the Old Testament and New Testament books and in the Common English Bible (CEB) the drop-down list shows all the books from the Old and New Testaments as well as from the Apocrypha.

This I find much easier than typing in the details of which book, chapter and verse one requires. Also, it highlights the verse you have requested.

The second item in the bar is the ability to lock all the books in either the left-hand panel (I use this for my Bibles) or the right-hand panel (which I use for commentaries) to either A or B etc (in LOGOS 8) or Group 1 or 2 etc (in WORDsearch).
