CHANGING THE ESV TO MY OWN LIKING

I have been thinking about changing my preferred bible from NASB to ESV, but I do not like the fact that the ESV does not use caps when addressing deity like the NASB or the NKJV. However, I found a way to change a single pronoun to caps by creating a new pallet in my "Highlighting Section" which I'd give it the title of something like, "SINGLE CAPS". All I'd have to do is highlight the letter "h' as in "he", click my pallette once, and presto it becomes "He", etc.

I understand that would be a very tedious job for me, and it might take me a couple of years (or more) to go through the whole Bible in order to finish it. I read about 10 chapters a day.

My question has to do with the integrity of the program. Will I cause any issues in the long run, or should I simply leave it alone and choose another translation like the NKJV (not my favorite yet)?

I can't think of any. Some users have highlights all over their Bibles and it doesn't seem to have any negative effect.

If, for some reason, you discover the program slows down a lot because of your highlighting, you can always turn it off in the Visual Filters menu.

I tried to think of a way to automate this using a Visual Filter, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to create a highlighting style that capitalizes just the first letter in a pronoun.

Is there anything that Referent tagging could supply here? Visual Filters are not my thing, so here's a shot in the dark.

You can create a visual filter which will change the pronouns referring to God to small caps.

Use the search terms:

"he ANDEQUALS <Person God>",

"his ANDEQUALS <Person God>"

"him ANDEQUALS <Person God>".

I think this will get you as close as you can get to what you want.

It isn't hard to locate all the pronouns that refer to God. It takes a combination morph search for pronouns and referent search for Person: God.

A Bible search would look like "@R INTERSECTS <Person God>" (without the quotes). You can use the search to form a Visual Filter, but that's where the problem of the highlighting limitation comes in. You can turn the entire pronoun into some other form (small caps, regular caps) but not just the first letter of the pronoun.

Nope, I have made changes like this to change LORD to YHWH. And Doulos to slave. I have some others too. Works well. Be aware it doesn’t sync to mobile.

You can't run a search for "he" where his refers to God and have it appear as the word "He", then separately do the same for "his", etc.?

No. We don't have a Search and Replace function in Logos.

True - but we can get close to emulating it by using a Visual Filter. An approach to this is outlined at https://community.logos.com/forums/p/16999/128949.aspx#128949

I created a highlighting style that replaces the original text with white font, size 20% and superscript text. That is to get rid of it as much as possible.

The same highlighting style includes the word He

Then searching for places where he intersects the person of God, I can create a visual filter and apply the highlight which gets close to the result we are discussing here

This could be replicated for other words.

Whether it is worth the effort is of course up to our needs!
