Logos 9

Are there any rumors or dates for logos 9. It would seem that logos is on a 2 years cycle with fall releases and honestly, I don't want to spend the money upgrading my current logos 8 libraries if logos 9 will be out this year as I would want to spend my professional expense to upgrade.

Be careful with your tactics! If there are things in any Logos 8 library that you are particularly keen on you might find them missing from the Logos 9 offerings.

I don't buy just because the libraries change - I now tend to buy what I want - sometimes it is more economical to buy what I want by buying a library upgrade.

My guess is L9 will not ship until well into 2021 in order to (1) allow the dust to settle from the WS acquisition and (2) give all of the new WS customers a chance to familiarize themselves with the FL/Logos environment/interface before they get hit with a new version.

Completely disagree! Sure, L8 had its issues. But it was by far their best advancement as far as features and GUI are concerned, IMO. Faithlife really upped the game with this release, even with the issues. The release was bold, visionary, and demonstrated well that FL wasn't programming under a rock, but rather listening to their users and making the best advancements to meet user needs as resources would allow.

Logos 4, particularly for Mac, was a rodeo that has never been matched. That said, Logos has generally exercised a Release Early, Release Often RORO software development philosophy.

The way around this is to wait at least a few weeks and watch the forums to find out if there are any major issues. Sometimes I will wait for several updates or even longer before upgrading which means enjoying the benefit of letting others debug the software the first number of weeks or months before you jump in.

You are referring to direction, vision & strategy. I am referring to how well that was executed and the readiness of the software. it was not ready and the marketing around it was misleading as promised were made about what was being delivered in the initial release that did not line up with what was delivered. Not only that a senior employee at FL made promises to me about what was being delivered up front with notes and what was delivered was not even close to the mark of his claims. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a business serving the church and Christian community to drop all the secular marketing techniques and speak the truth.

Let’s hope marketing and developers get on the same page for Logos 9 and communicate the truth of what is customers are getting up front versus what the hole deliver for 9.5 or 9.8 etc but alas FL‘s track record on this does not leave me with a lot of confidence.

I tend to wait to Donovan with most software but with Logos after a new release you basically can’t add any purchases post that point in time to your library because they say you need the latest software release for that book to function and so you get forced into upgrading or not having the book you want for months while Logos developers fix all the stuff you that got broken in the upgrade after they add in all the stuff marketing said was going to be in there at initial releas.

All supported versions of the software are updated to support newly published books. This includes (after a major release) the prior version of the software for quite some time after the release.

Logos 8 was released around Oct 29, 2018. Logos 7 remained supported until May 28, 2019, which means that until that date, lack of support for a new resource in Logos 7 would have been considered a bug to be fixed with an additional release.

That has not always been the case with my life experience with this company and I was unaware of that change in process but as you said if there is a problem, it is a bug to be fixed and how much priory is going to be given to fixing a bug in the prior version of the software when there are bugs or missing feature in the new version which marketing has said would be functional at initial release and now development team has to work to remedy those issue.

Another major mis truth with Logos 8 was we were told we could upgrade to the new notes when we choose. This was false. I was converted over to new notes with no say in it and the mobile app was also put on the new notes with no user choice meaning even if I remained in n the old notes on the desktop they would be orphaned from my mobile notes.

Whether people like it being said or not FL botched the release of Logos 8 with broken software that did not meet the marketing hype and was not ready to be released. From what s FL employee to me there was not enough fingers on keyboards for the notes system to be ready in the time frame company executives set for its release. And that’s just the notes system, the home page, despite the marketing was not up to scratch.

Developers release software as is without any upfront admission of what is missing or broken and company execs wait to see what users complain about. After that we get a we get customer facing staff left to explain deadlines for release had to be met but development couldn’t get x,y & z done on time so well address them in the next few maintenances releases and hope to have sorted out by the full x,1 release. And then a web page goes up explaining what wasn’t done and wI’ll be addressed in future releases.

I’ll be very happy if they prove me wrong this time around.

You have a point that we don't fix non-critical bugs in old versions of the software. Like all software companies, we would rather invest in moving forward than spend resources to keep propping up the past.

A "Maintenance" version of Logos falls under the category of "supported," and will continue to get updates to use newly published books.

Thus should not be done a week or two later but concurrent with the release. FL takes customer goodwill for granted rather than showing customers respect.

I have silently disagreed to this point.

However I need to point out that one of the perks of Now was having the latest greatest iteration of the software. I haven't kept up with the marketing with Connect as I'd rather own, than lease. But if its like Now was, then yes. Day 1. welcome to 9

. Its one of the perks you pay for. Call customer service and make sure... Because if you don't want one of the perks you pay for, I'm pretty sure that will be the only way to stop it.

Then he can just run updates at his leisure (after double-checking that 9 hasn't been released) however often/long until it actually is released, whereupon he can decide whether to download it or not.

The point is I was upgrade to 8 without choosing to upgrade. I should have been able to stay on 7 and allow my system to pick up updates to 7 as they were made available. SGould not have been reason to turn off updates as you are suggesting. And I should be able to stay on 8 and pick up updates to it as they come avai rather than being automatically updated to 9. And I should not have to cancel me connect membership and loose the benefits i make use of just to avoid being automatically upgraded before I am ready to upgrade.

Because if you don't want one of the perks you pay for, I'm pretty sure that will be the only way to stop it.
