Beyond Bible Book Guides - Use a Collection for Monographs?
Former WORDsearch user/current Logos Newbie here who loves Logos so much, I've already upgraded to the Silver pkg. So I have almost 1000 volumes in my library. Now, I'm trying to organize them for my studies.
I've worked through 2 and a half days of MP Seminars' Camp Logos 8 (thank you, Morris Proctor!) in addition to pouring over more training in the Logos 8 A-V, especially the Factbook, Collections, and a little of the Cultural Concepts.
In studying a bible book, in addition to using the Bible Book Guides via Factbook as I get started for overview and background info, I have other works I want to consult, e.g. a few study bibles AND a growing number of surveys, overviews, outlines, etc.
1. Logos seems to handle Study Bibles differently than WS which classified their notes within the same section as commentaries. So could someone point me to some training or documentation to help me get my head around using Study Bibles? I'm thinking for this type of study, I just need to create a separate panel/tab for them in a layout?
2. I am tagging all the survey and intro books I want to use as Surveys. All of them are type Monograph. I know I could easily make a collection of them as well. Regardless, what's the best way of referencing them in my study? If you say search, then please explain WHAT to search for? Alternatively, is this where I might add them (some way?) to a custom Guide or Workflow? (I've not watched the videos on either yet.)
What say all you Logos experts? 
Oh, and if you say "use the Guide or create a Workflow," then just SAY so and I'll look for the "how to" in Moe's excellent videos. Thanks!

Welcome Sharon! You can create a collection that consists of both commentaries and study Bibles, and search that collection. I began by organizing my library by theology and denomination using tags; there's an Excel file linked on this page that will help to that end: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/54491.aspx?PageIndex=29. It includes the sort of search text that allows you to find and then tag specific resources. Then I used those tags to specify which resources I wanted in a particular collection. Finally, I search by that collection.
By the way, depending on how many resources you have, tagging resources in the Logos Library can take a little time. Logos is powerful, not quick.

Here are 3 ways to access your monographs via a tag:
- Cited By Tool linked to your biblical text. Make sure to create a section for the tagged monographs. The Cited by section will show every place the verse reference is mentioned.
- Create a section in a Passage Guide for the tagged monographs and link the Passage guide to your biblical text. Same result as above.
- Create a section in a Topical Guide for the tagged monographs. Enter a topic and the guide will search for headings for that topic.

Have you started using the Passage Guide as yet?
I have created a custom Guide and added a number of sections for different type of commentaries including one for Study Guides. Now when using the Guide on a passage, all the Study Guides with relevant articles appear in that section.

As John says you can do the same thing for monographs - putting them into a different section of the Guide.
But please note they will be handled differently. Commentaries and Study Guides - because they are indexed with bible references - only return articles that are related to the article you are studying. Monographs will return results anytime that reference appears in the text which might result in a lot of results that are not relevant to the specific book you are studying.

Many of the type:monograph studies that deal with a specific bible text have been collected in a Personal Book that you can compile in Logos as type:"bible commentary" and prioritize among your commentaries - then it will show up in passage guides etc. Forum user Richard Wilson did this massive labor of love and updates it from time to time

Great info, John! Thanks! I had not looked at the Cited By Tool. So I've already started watching some of Moe's videos about it this morning. SO many tools in Logos! It's going to take me a while to learn about all of them...but I WILL persevere! LOL! Thanks, again!

Thanks, Graham! I am just now starting to use the Passage Guide (love it!), and I'm in the middle of watching on of Moe's videos (Camp Logos) on creating custom guides. I'll check out the articles. Thanks so much for the help!

I just downloaded his 6663.index docx file. Wow! Pretty amazing all he's done. I plan to watch Moe's full set of videos on Personal Books today or tomorrow, so will look into this. Thanks so much for the links.

I'm not Graham, but here is my PG with the sections I have added: [hint: if you save the guide with the sections closed (triangle sideways), your Layout will open quicker, but then may tack a few seconds to populate when you open (click on triangle) each section. I choose to populate the sections when I need them rather than at the beginning of each session when I open the layout]
Many of these commentary sections are dynamic (resources automatically are included in the collection if I purchase them later) based upon the rules you can find discussed here: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/88829.aspx

Mine is very similar to David's with the Collections based on the work Mark Barnes did in the post David linked to.
Note that, in that post, Mark describes how you can download the Collection definitions if you wish.
I have also added in one additional Commentary collection - one I call BestCommentaries.
For each biblical book, I have tagged my five or six preferred commentaries and created a collection just using that tag. Then, for whatever passage I am studying in the Guide I have immediate access to those preferred commentaries.

tagging resources in the Logos Library can take a little time. Logos is powerful, not quick.
You got that right! LOL! But I watched Morris Proctor' great video course, "Organizing Your Books." He has two cheatsheets of his entire tagging system. Plus, it helps to have an administrative gift on top of over 32 years of programming computers. Check...and check! [;)]

I thought I had a handle on this, but I guess not.
I have tagged many of my books, including several Monographs. Then, I created collections and added them to my Passage Guide. ALL resources that are "versified" (indexed for Bible) are working fine. But the collection of Monographs are not. I verified this by viewing a book in one of the collections to see Bible references, then ran my Passage Guide report on those. The report showed zero resources in that section.
So can I use the Cited By tool within my Passage Guide...or am I misunderstanding this tool? Regardless of which tool I use, what I want is to be able to include collections of monographs WITHIN my Passage Guide, and so far, I haven't figured out how to do it short of producing the Personal Book as was explained by others here in this thread.

I highlight text in my comment, then the greyed-out link/unlink become active. Click on "link" and paste into the pop-up.

To try and show this working I have created a demo guide with just one collection. This is shown on the top right of the screenshot below and it includes my collection titled JohnTheology. Details of this collection are shown at the bottom right.
Then running the Guide (top left) on John 1:1 finds all places on the resources in that collection where John 1:1 is referenced. Clicking a result enables me to open the resource to that reference (bottom left)
How does this differ from what you are doing / seeing?

The Cited By Tool does not run in the Passage Guide, but as a separate Tool
In the screenshot below, I have it open on the right and added a number of Collections to it - including JohnTheology.
Then specifying a verse / passage at the top it shows me all resources in that Collection that reference it. Again, clicking a result opens the resource to that point (shown on the left)

As compared to a "study guide" usually a 6-13 session group discussion guide, my Bible Guides is a group of 2 series that quickly bring to the surface issues that I want to consider when preaching an exegetical sermon. What are the potential questions that congregants might ask when they read a text. These 2 series are basically a summary of the other commentaries (with links) that have already been published.

Thanks. I didn't find a resource titled, Lexham Bible Guide, but I see that some in the Lexham Research Commentary series are in production. The LHC looks great and right up my alley...but a bit out of my price range for the moment. I'll add them to my ever-growing Wish List. [:)]

FYI - the Lexham Bible Guides were renamed to Lexham Research Commentaries about a year ago

Also, I just now figured out why my first stab at including Monographs into my custom guide didn't work. I had added them using the Commentaries section rather than a Collection, even though I had grouped them into a collection.
I'm off and running with this tagging/collections/custom guides now! Wow! I continue to be stunned at the vastness of what Logos has created here. Thanks so much for your help.

I was reminded of this the other day when I was searching for a particular concept. I found two references to it in my entire library - references that were very useful in the study I was doing. I reflected on how difficult (probably impractical) it would have been to find those two references in an equivalent paper library.
