L9 Reading Plans Discussion

I love this! I don’t seem to be able to use it with my entire library yet, though? I was just about to create a reading plan for The Sacred Bridge, but the title isn’t visible when I try to create a new plan. Nor is the commentary on Job I’m working through.

I have roughly 5,000 books showing out of the approx 7,000 that I own.

Hi James! So glad you are keen to try our reading plans improvements. One of the things we wanted to do was make it as easy as possible to start a reading plan from a book in your library. The general approach we took was to us an algorithm to break down a book chapter by chapter. From personal experience and talking with users, we hear that most people prefer to read their books chapter by chapter. 

Currently, this feature currently only supports these resource types (resources that are faily simple to break down into a chapter by chapter format):  text.monograph, text.serial.journal, text.serial.magazine, text.monograph.sermons, text.monograph.systematic-theology, text.monograph.grammar, lbx.calendar-devotional, text.monograph.ancient-manuscript, text.monograph.biblical-theology, text.monograph.letters, text.monograph.confessional-document, text.monograph.hymnal, text.monograph.poetry, text.monograph.prayers.

Sorry if that list i a bit jargony-- I copied it from an internal doc. I know we can do a better job with how we communicate this-- and your question is a good example of that. 

Most resources, for most people, should be covered by this new quick-creation feature.

Where is the read later feature?  I see the "start reading plan" in the library but not anything about reading later.

You can add books to your Read Later list from the main library list. Tap the 3-dot icon on the right hand side of the book, and you should see some options appear, including adding it to Read Later.

That will be so perfect. I actually have a "want to read" folder in my favorites. Having it in the reading plan tool will be great. Thanks for that, Carla

When I click the 3-dot icon on the right hand of the book I get a list of options that include prioritize resource and start reading plan but no read later list. I'm sure it's user error!

Wonderful feature! I constantly run across books I own that bring a "Wow, I didn't know I owned that" followed by "I should remember to read this when I'm done with X" followed by the magic mind eraser that comers with age.

Are you trying this on desktop or web? 

Read Later is currently only available on our mobile app. However, when you add something to the Read Later list on mobile, we add a special tag to that resource (#ReadLater). You can view what books have this tag on desktop by visiting the library and filtering down to that tag. You can also add that tag on desktop to any resource that you want to have show up in the Read Later list on mobile. 

If we hear from users that they enjoy the Read Later list on mobile, we'll likely bring it to desktop as well.

Are these monograph subtypes exposed in the library panel?

In future updates, can you make it easier to create a more complex custom reading plan? I've been following the Christ Church reading plans (http://bit.ly/totheword2020) for the last couple of years, and last year I punched it into logos, but it was quite the chore. I love the reading plan feature, but it would be nice if I could add larger lists of passages, adjust dates more easily, and maybe include notes to the reader (i.e. designate catch up days). Thanks for your hard work, L9 is great so far!

Please, please, please make it available in desktop. I can give you a 1000 votes for it now. LOL I keep a "Want to Read" folder in my favorites, but it would be huge to have a facet for it.  If I add the #ReadLater tag on my desktop, will it show up as a facet under tags on the desktop?  I am glad I saw your post. I heard about and have been looking for it ever since without being able to find it. Carla

If you add a book to Read Later on mobile, we automatically add a #ReadLater tag-- which means you can use faceted browsing to see the items on desktop via faceted browsing. 

Conversely, if you add the tag "#ReadLater" to a book on desktop, it will show up in your Read Later list on mobile.

Monograph subtypes are not exposed in faceting on mobile. But using the Type: Monograph filter should get you most of the way there.

Is anyone else having trouble with the app hanging (or force-closing) when tapping "finish" on a reading?

It doesn't happen every time, but quite regularly.

Sorry that is happening to you. Can you tell us more? What kind of device are you using? Is it a custom reading plan or something that you started in the app (like a Bible reading plan or if you used the new reading plan creation feature on mobile)? 

Can you consistently reproduce? When it hangs, does it crash every time?

I'm using a Google Pixel 3 running Android 11.

Bible-based reading plans seem to be working fine.  A book-based "read at your own pace" plan that I generated in the app using Logos 9 also works properly.

The ones that are crashing are reading plans based on a book and generated in the desktop app (before updating to Logos 9).

When I tap the reading plan entry on the dashboard or the entry in the reading plan doc, It opens today's reading.

But when I click on Finish, the app hangs for 10-20 seconds and then crashes.

When I re-open the app, I see the reading plan document.  If I click on "See Completed" it shows that the entry I had been reading was marked as completed.

I can consistently repeat this in reading plans based on a book, using the desktop feature "Generate a Reading Plan" and created in Logos 8.

Daniel, I appreciate your help. I rarely use Logos mobile unless I want to listen to an audio Bible in the car. Too hard to see on the small screen, etc. What I was asking was this: If I enter at tag #readlater on the desktop will that be searchable and show up in facets like my other tags so I can create a read later list that way, or even a collection since the functionality is not on the desktop yet?

This as my second day reading “The Message” in the reading plan format.  Once again, the last verse was cut off.  This needs to be looked into..

1. I've complained about that occasional last verse text cut off problem since L9 alpha (or early beta) days.  So far, it still happens.

2. Now, My "365 Day Connect The Testaments" reading plan won't show start and stop points in my NASB95 on my PC. It does on my mobile, but not my PC.

EDIT:  Ha!  I fixed that second problem!  I had turned off my Reading Plan Markers in Visual filters.  I turned it back on and voila!  I am a Happy Camper once again.
