Atlas Priority Recommendations

I admit that I have been a slacker in terms of using atlas resources. I've got a whole bunch now especially since Carta is now in Logos. I put some up in a toolbar folder for a start, but I thought I should prioritize some. Can I get some real atlas maven recommendations as to which ones should be given pride of place? My thought is to put them next to my dictionaries/encyclopedias. Thoughts?

My big problem is remembering who has the good map on XYZ. Of course, I tag my volumes so they pop up in my CitedBy (alt PassageGuide).

But 'the really good map' can be maddenly illusive ... you know, that one that showed where the early copper mines were. Or explained the trick the Egyptian army used below Magido (sp). Just easy examples.

I respectfully disagree with this statement. Techincally we do not need to prioritize any resource. The software will function fine without doing so but we do prioritize in order for the software to know what resources we prefer to see first. Setting up preferences to make them work to your advatnage is about thinking outside the box

By saying Atlas resources are only good for sticking in a collection for use in a media search you are ignoring the fact a good bible atlas is much more than a soure of maps, they also contain useful facts and articles that provide context to the maps.

My personal perference is to prioritize the Zondervan Atlas of the Bibleas the first resouce in my list of prioritized general reference resources (atlases/dictionaries/encyclopedias).

With ZAB as my first prioritized reference resource if I right click on a place name, such as Zarethan in Joshua 3:16, ZAB shows up as my first keylink Lookup and without the need to open any resource I have at my fingertips informaiton on where the place is and where it may also have been mentioned elsewhere in the bible and important events associated with the place. Often this provides me with more than enough information to answer my questions about the place and I can continue with my reading without the distraciton of having to open an encyclopedia and look through an article to find the information I want to know. The Encylopeidas are wordy and tend not to provide the summary information in one place that the ZAB does nicely.

I may or may not choose a different Atlas to put at the top of the list once I become familar with the new Cartra resources in Logos 9 libraries but for now ZAB works well.

The Carta Bible Atlas, for example, is also of type Atlas but is only indexed by Page

I put ZAB into my priority for now and made a base collection for Atlas. I still could use some recommendations as to perhaps prime atlas in the collection. My thought right now is ZAB ESV and certain CARTA but I could use some guidance in those.

I've checked all my "Type:Atlas" books, I have 17. There is only two that are indexed by page & english headword, Zondervan Atlas of the Bible & the Holman Bible Atlas.

I wonder if any of the other Atlas can be indexed by english headword?

ZAB carries place names, but HBA carries architectural terms not found in the bible. ZAB could be the only one for consideration as a Bible Dictionary.

Biblical Places Maps carries just about every place, but it is awkward and you really have to look for the place. So I threw it out of my collection.

"Rose Then and Now Bible Map Atlas" carries Chorazin and Zarethan where others do not (I don't have ZAB). "Logos Deluxe Map Set" and "Holman Bible Atlas" are good but you have to export the maps for better readability. "Crossway ESV Bible Atlas" is better in that you can comfortably view in Logos ("ESV Study Bible" appears to carry the same maps but the focus is different to the dedicated Crossway).

"Holman QuickSource Guide" is reasonable.

If looking for Jerusalem then Carta is great (in my limited set of 3, it didn't appear for the other places I used).

So the above are my pick for a collection.

I still vote New Bible Atlas. I think Mr Bink's clued me in. Holman's a repeat of maps in your average Bible (which are good). Zondervan is a huh? Biblical Places, a good idea poorly implemented. And Nelson from the 1950s.

I think (my opinion) that folks miss the point on Carta ... it's the in-depth discussion that's unique (eg not easily found elsewhere in Logos). Granted, not Sunday morning stuff.

All Atlases are not built the same as you have pointed out which is why I disagree with your blanket statement about them. We need to talk about how a resource is indexed rather than type of resource when it comes to prioritisation decisions.

It has been around since Libby days and looking at the resource id as far back as when Libby was just a spark in Bob Pritchett’s eye. Hence New Bible Atlas despite the tithe may have been overlooked simply because it’s an older member of the community.

Disciple, I asked Libby about NBA. She didn't know anything about a 'monograph' but had defined subjects for dictionary, maps, etc. But she also reminded me, that NBA had the peculiarity, that if you hover a map, a click brings up an image-save panel! Interestingly, that functionality is also in Logos (at least L7). The other map resources want a right-click (except Oxford Commentary, that zooms).

Another functionality is you can CitedBy it to the Josephus indices, in addition to the Bible. I didn't try it, though.

My favorite Bible atlas is Google Earth with the Bible KMZ file installed (https://www.openbible.info/geo/). I turn off most of the layers (roads, 3D buildings, etc), and it works very well. That being said, I want an atlas to just tell me WHERE a place was, and not give me all the detailed information that I can get through other resources).

"Good" atlases do contain useful facts and articles, but each is oriented differently and it doesn't depend upon them being indexed (potentially) with English Headwords.

I'm comfortable with this amended 'blanket statement" rather than have users think about Prioritizing their atlases. If there is another ZAB that can be usefully prioritized, I'm sure we will hear about it.
